Well, since most Necrons have no souls left in them whatsoever, I wouldn't make the entire army 'good necrons.'

However, Necron Lords are Necrons who have retained some level of sentience. Just say that the Necron Lord of your army wants vengence against the C'tan for tricking them. Being a lord, he has full command over the rest of the Necrons in his army, making them 'good' by proxy.

Haha I've been trying to think of a super-cheezy backstory to my necrons why they're just misunderstood good guys that everyone's scared of too, they just need a hug xD Well the warhammer universe is a huge place so I suppose something could happen with just one world among billions

No offense, but you should be smacked with the stupid-stick.

There are two, arguably three real bad guys in 40k. And they are Necrons, Tyranids and Dark Eldar.

Necrons want to sacrifice all life to their Gods.
Tyranids want to eat all life.
Dark Eldar want to drink your immortal soul to stave off the predations of Slaanesh.

Why in the world would you want 'good' bad guys?

A thought of what that might be like:
Necrons that become Martha Stewart Terminators looking for Sarah Conor.
Tyranids become Barney.
Dark Eldar become those jaded hookers that just clubbed you over the head and stole your wallet, but still have a heart of gold?

Thanks but no. Keep the bad guys bad.

I disagree, as long as you can write up good fluff thats reasonable and sensable you can do theorically do whatever you like with an army. Granted a system error giving souls back may not be the way forward, but I assume he was just giving an example of what could have happened.

Personally I like the idea of the Necron lord retaining some of his previous sentience and guiding his warriors.

A 40K army is guided by its creator, and having individuality like this adds flavour and depth for your games making it more enjoyable IMHO.

Though I'd agree that it would be practically impossible to do it with Dark Eldar or Tyranids, or at least beyond my limited brain power

@OP Best bet is to do what you feel and accept that many players will raise an eyebrow and look at you strangly, but go for it anyway.

How can you make the exception for a race of soulless/mindless metallic skeletons driven by the will of the gods they serve? Your logic is flawed.

But the necrons aren't mindless. In the background section of the rulebook, they specifically mention that necron lords retain some sense of their personalities, with some pursuing greater and more grandiose forms, or others leading great campaigns to satisfy their thirst for death. The necrons are controlled by the C'tan, but that doesn't mean that their control is necessarily absolute. What with the mention of plundered/failed communication nodes and other malfunctioning necron hardware, there might very well be failings in the necron command system; failings that I choose to exploit in my necron Commander.

Easily, see my post
I can also make exceptions for other races, all it needs is a logically based reason that is plausible and realistic. Hive minds could contract virus's, Space Marines can unwittingly be serving chaos without realising they are being manipulated, (as horus did to others IIRC)
Orks isolated from their warbands become less aggressive (in the codex)
Tau lose their way if the Etherals are killed (commander farsight)

Not having a dig, just backing up my point of view.

EDIT: I'll happily admit the Dark Eldar have me stumped, maybe I'll gleam something from there new codex ... ... ... couldn't resist

iam not sure if this is proper fluff but i read it somewhere. Flayed ones were necrons that resistest the change thats why they are hiedous hunched things, with only close combat wepons rather than hi tech gauss rifles.

That is one reason why cover them selfs with flesh to make it seem like they are normal and alive with flesh. This dosnt work very well though.

Ok, this is an interesting topic,
I have written a couple of small Necron army add on army books, but the thought of a galatically excepted (no scrub that liked by anyone necron army) hadn't actually occured to me. This said, i'm not resistant to the idea.

Can i point out at this time i don't beleive that the soul is removed per say, as more suppressed by means of a cleverly disguised implant etc. I say this only because the codex points out quite loudly the only technically soulless unit (pariahs) as it comes with the fun of the extra ability, could be wrong on this.

That said, the fact that they are (or aren't) souless is not what makes them imortal, that is the technology, and the technology does not make them evil, that is due to them not being able to make decisions for themself * cough* jar heads *cough*, it wasn't me i was ordered to do it.

This bring us to my latest project in a round about way. So some of the necrontyr who were low on the political chain found out what happened before hand when you were upgraded (lol cybermen) ( i.e. lack of will) and since the c'tan didn't fashion the bodies themselves there had to be scientists that did it for them. ( some with morals working on the bodies, some without work on the mind control (promised leadership). So these Necrontyr pollies sneak in tell the good scientist whats happening and hey presto we have a resistance stating to form with the fluff, the technology, the reason.

This is how you can justify it, this is also where the story parts from your idea though. Because my guys didn't have enough time to re-engineer all of the technologies, and so to keep fighting on a level playing field as they're metallic cousins, they incased themselves in a personal mini tank (or as people quickly worked out from the bulsa proxies during play testing "DALEKs")

@ a hobo, yeah i think i read something along that line to, and not only did the proceedure not go quite to plan but then went a little psycho (maybe realizing what they had become) but the tomb world still hold them in check.

Hmm now lests see, good ideas for nids and dark elder so as not to be picked on for racist discrimination.

Nids invade the home world of Hello Kitty or the Ewoks ( about the same isn't it) think the can us the cuteness as a new weapon and asimalte the genes and got more then they barganed for (kind of silly version, but it shows an avenue) (hive absorbs a gene that severe it from the hive mind, orkish maybe, dunno.... you got some of the work).

Dark elder......hmmmm, wait for it somethings coming.........a group of them met the emporer one day(while on a stroll across the war torn battlefield) and he said ''ssshhh calm yourself, now whats all this about then''. After telling their sorted tail he goes,'' for psycho misguided xenos your alright, I'm the leader of a grand new race, with genetically engineered warriors the peers of all other fighters. Fight for us and i will protect you, for my sons the primachs and their children are uncoruptable by the ruiness forces of chaos'' ( jab sorry, couldn't resist)...

Sigh thats my 2 cents for now keep up the debate

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, Terrorism is the lowest form of war.

When i start my nid army, im totally doing it pink and purple, and giving it Hellykittyfluff. Kittystealers, Kittyfexes, HelloGaunts etc.

thats a stretch. and i cant come up with anything better... maybe so tainted by slanesh they want to convert the humans to be just as corrupt as them - so they appeal to the humans by fighting alongside them to get them to drop their emperor mind-guard. still evil, but sneaky evil.

THE HORUS HERESY: Emprah: Hours, go reconquer the galaxy so there can be a new golden age. Horus: But I should be Emprah, bawwwwww! Emprah: Magnus, stop it with the sorcery. Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Emprah's always right. Plus Ole Red has already been denounced as a traitor and I never liked him anyway. Russ: You're about to die, cyclops! Magnus: O noes! Tzeentch, I choose you! Bawwwww! Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Sanguinius: *throws self on Horus's power claws* Alas, I am undone! When you play Castlevania, remember me! *enter Emprah* Emprah: Horus! So my favorite son killed my favorite daughter! Horus: What about the Lion? Emprah: Never liked her. Horus: No one does. Now prepare to die! *mortally wounds Emprah*Emprah: Au contraire, you dick. *kills Horus* Dorn: Okay, now I just plug this into this and . . . okay, it works! Emprah? Hellooooo? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. It's not that bad. Dorn: I guess not. Russ: You all suck. Ima go bring the Emprah back to life.

Thats implying that 'standard' Necrons are not Good.

Judging another race by our moral codes doesn't make sense, because of course we will see ourselves as Good and everyone was Evil.

By Necron standards they are 'Good' and everyone else is food for the Gods.

IIRC from the Necron Codex, any Necrontyr who opposed the C'tan were killed by fanatic mobs.

However, the idea of "good" Necrons could be fun. I like the idea mentioned earlier of Necron armies that once served other C'tan murdered and consumed by the current 4, and seeking revenge.
