Well my Vyper riding WraithGuard is almost ready to be primed and painted.

And while his green stuff was curing I decided to play around with diffrent yellows and finally decided on a way of doing it that turns out pretty good (IMO). So I did up one of my Storm Guardians, primed white, basecoated Iyanden Darksun, then drybrushed on elf flesh, and used P3 Yellow ink over that. The idea being the ink hardly does anything to the foundation but shows a nice golden yellow over the elf flesh parts. Then on top of that I did some hard edged highlights with Sunburst Yellow. The helm and backfins are Mordian blue/enchanted blue with Shadow Grey as highlighs. ALSO I went ahead and based this one. This is my first "real" attempt at basing a fig, and I had a little trouble with the static grass. I'm going for a rocky desert theme with some patches of dry grass. I painted the border of the base black because I like that look (or maybe i'm just used to it after playing on and off for 10 years and never basing a fig XD), and it serves to contrast with the yellow army theme. Then snakebite leather on the top of the base, followed with the galeforce sand basing material, with some larger size rocks thrown in and a bit of that static grass.

NOW, here is a question for anyone who cares... the Ink leaves a bit of a gloss on the model. I will eventualy be using matte varnish to seal the models but my question is, will the matte varnish mess up the static grass? Making it clump together or some such?

That Wraithvyper is cool! Good job sculpting it. I'm also working on an Iyanden force and have been wanting to add more wraith constructs into the army but I hadn't thought of doing that, great work sir!

One thing I am doing for my force is using 20 of the old 'Ghost Warrior' wraith constructs that used to come with the original dreadnougts. One sculpt has a shuriken catapult mounted in its head and I will probably used those as 'counts as' Dire Avengers. The other sculpt has a flamer mounted in the head and a chainfist on one arm; I'm torn on using those as either Howling Banshees or Striking Scorpions. Anyway, here is a picture of them next to a Ranger for scale. Not sure how hard these guys are to find now as I've had mine for a while. One was an 'Assassin' and the other was a 'Executioner' though I can never keep straight which was which.

I really like the pistol wielding eldar diving backwards - really captures the cool side of eldar for me, that they are swift and nible yet deadly - rather then space elves with alot of bling.

Do you base your models?

I'm glad I ordered mine before they stopped selling archive bits. I have seen some on Ebay occasionally.

YojimboJones: did you paint or use a marker for the guardian's Iyanden symbol?

That is an exellent idea and it has crossed my mind but like JD said, they are indeed very hard to find. And once you do people want alot of money. Thankfully when I first started playing, it was my plan to run the craftworld Iyanden army list where each squad of Wraithguard you had you could field a wraithlord, all as troops. So I think I have around 18 Wraithguard lying around. I can use those guys for various conversions, but would definatly like to pick up a few of the Ghost Warriors if I get the chance!

The yellows on that guardian look a bit bright in that pic due to the way the picture was taken. That was a white basecoat, Iyanden darksun, then Elf flesh drybrushed over that, then P3 Yellow ink, then Sunburst yellow highlights. If you were talking about the VYPER though, that was spraypaint. lol IMO spraying is the only way to go for vhecials, paiting the GW acrylic yellows over such a large surface is just begging for a headache. I did my first falcon that way and was not pleased with the results at all.

Thanks! When I make my guys and play them I try to forget the meta game of "oh, eldar are so weak with str 3 and toughness 3, I need to run and hide from marines" and just make them as badass as I can! As for basing, that guardian I just did was my first ever base job. So going forward I will be basing my army with that rocky desert theme.

I used a 0.5 Micron black pen. You can get some really good results with this kind of pen painting symbols and runes against a bright backround, just becarful because it will smudge very easily. So either paint it in out of the way places or be sure to use varnish.

Today i'll probably be basing my fire dragons so at least I can say i've got 1 squad that's 100% done. Then start working on jetbike warlocks and finishing up the wraithvyper.

To answer your question: varnish and then base. Otherwise the varnish sticks and clumps to the grass. Looks awful...

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
