Hi all.
Do you NEED to have umpteen special rules that contradict -reverse the basic rules game mechanics, so each army feels unique?
NO.

But for this to happen you need a good set of basic rules with appropriate game mechanics in place.
40k has not got this. Its stuck with a 'mutated WH clone' rule set as a base.

And so all these 'bolt on bits' to make the game 'kewl', SEEM to be necissary to alot of 40k players.

Other game system manage to cover much wider diversity than 40k, with MUCH simpler , more straight forward rules.

But you do not want to be able to buy a rule book for £30 and just play any army you like without forking out for dozens of extra books at £15-18 each do you?

Well GW dont want you to anyway!

The point is, they can do it, but why no one else? Why are they, alone, the only Jump Pack troops in the galaxy capable of doing this? Why are 10,000 year old Horus Heresy Veteran Raptors unable to do this?

Can't the orks and dark eldar do it too? The former with zaggstruck and the latter with webway gates?

Well with Zagstruk at least it kinda makes sense since he fights with his feet and can claw you up pretty bad before he ever touches the ground.

...and the WHFB style morale checks give the lie to that, now a tiny assault unit or character can accomplish in one charge what would have taken turns before, even against fearless opponents because of the casualty penalty.

What's irritating is when there are special rules with the same name, such as Feel No Pain, the modern version and the Dark Eldar version.

So they kill one unit, then the rest of the army guns down the assault unit. Assault units were way more dangerous last edition when they could just hop from unit to unit.

The new moral system makes a good deal of sense, if a pile of your buddies get hacked to bits your not going to feel like standing around to fight some more. As to fearless the big momentum boost from choping down so many guys carries through to hit the survivors.
