Glad to hear... it's always good when a developer beats a user to a critique. I will await its addition with bated breath... and upload a bunch more in the meantime

EDIT: Alright, I uploaded a bunch and set up shop (thanks again!) and then posted some shots in the forums... I noticed that when I clicked the text for the 'Forums' link already tagged, it said 'Copied to Clipboard', but it didn't actually copy it, bc/ when I went back to my forum tab to post them, it was still pasting the last thing in my CB... don't know if it's a bug on your end or mine.

Don't forget to VOTE on the pics, everyone, especially the 'lesser' pictures (like the WIP stuff). The gallery is designed to work best when every image has at least five votes on each picture. While that will naturally happen in time, the quicker the better because then the system will start filtering pics properly based on votes.

So please don't just vote for great models, make sure you give those 'lesser' pictures their rightful low vote, not to spite them but rather to make the gallery system work even better.

Well, I spent some time voting on and tagging images... glad to see some people are starting to use the new gallery. One thing I noticed is that there's room for some standardization of tags... in the tag-cloud, 'Marine', 'Marines', and 'Space Marines' all give different results, even tho they're really the same group...

Actually, uniformity is not an issue. This is because admins/mods have the power to 'merge' a tag into another tag at will.

So now that you've brought it up to me I've merged 'marine' & 'marines' into the more descriptive 'space marine' tag and within a few days you should see those tags disappear from the cloud.

I periodically try to take a look through the tags and merge those that need to be merged, but if anyone ever spots some, you can always PM a mod or admin and we will take care of merging the tags into one.

That is awesome... it sounds like you guys really have covered all the bases then. Again, thanks for this amazing service.

This is a wicked addition to Dakka. However, my pictures haven't been 'automatically uploaded already' as far as I can tell. I go to my gallery homepage and it says, "Darth Fugly has not created any galleries yet. You can create a gallery by editing any image, then specifying a gallery to put it in." Can someone explain in slow baby-talk how I edit an image and specify a gallery to put it in without completely spazzing everything up please.

EDIT: Hurray! Below post answers question. They were from my photobucket, but I always skip the extra 'add tags' step.

You need to take your images through the second step of uploading where you add all the titles and galleries and tags and such to them... if you somehow skipped that step, you can still finish them by going to your personal gallery page and clicking 'View Your Half-Finished Uploads), which will bring you back to the second step of uploading images (first step is just uploading and letting the server make thumbnails, second is sorting them and tagging them).

What forum were your pics originally posted?

They should have automatically uploaded from any picture ATTACHED (not linked from another site) to a forum post made in the photo-dump, modeling & Painting or P&M blog forum (or uploaded to the articles system).

But really at this point it's pretty clear that your pics haven't been automatically uploaded, so you'll just need to take a little bit of time to upload your pics either from your computer or from an existing source on the web (like photobucket).

Once you've uploaded a picture you'll be able to create galleries to put them in.

Is there a way to totally randomize images you view? I mean, to put in some factor
that draws you to some other pool of images?

Sometimes I'm rating images and run into image 1 of 12, 2 of 12 and 5 of 12.

There is randomisation, but it wont take full effect until the majority of images have had 5+ votes. That should happen over the next couple of weeks, so keep voting and the gallery will keep improving itself.

The one thing I don't like is that if you go to a specific gallery and then view one of the images, when you click 'skip to next image' to look at the rear view of whatever it was, you don't get the next image in that gallery, you just get a random image. I, personally, think the skip button should keep you in the gallery you started with.

It would also be cool if you could rate the quality of the photography on each picture...

The specific gallery thing was added in at quite a late stage, so it is still rather rough. In a future version, the skip button (and voting) will send you to another image in the same gallery, or even the same search results from your search query. This is still a little ways off as I am crazy busy with real life until after xmas now, but it is in the near term pipeline.

I think the 'coolness' rating is probably the most appropriate for this. If the photo is crap, it is not so cool, and for awful photos, they get a N/A.

Ah, thanks. Glad to hear the first bit, and I suppose the second bit makes sense too.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I've been putting ten or so minutes into voting on the gallery every morning, but I still keep getting the Sentinels and the Blue/Pink tyranids. Today I gave painting N/A's and zero/low coolness ratings to a bunch of Stelek's WW2 battle report pictures as well.

Sigh.

It shouldnt show you any image that you have voted on before. Are you using multiple computers and are you logged in when doing it?

So when you're voting on coolness, do you give it N/A if it isn't converted at all?

I give above average coolness marks to novel ideas and well-executed ideas, not necessarily just conversions.

I think I've gotten through all of the sentinel shots now. I was still getting them before anything else, it seemed. Not repeats, it just seems as though the first few pictures were always from the gallery those sentinels were in. Same computer - not a problem, just grumbling/suspicious. There are a lot more pictures than that, and it didn't seem particularly 'random'.
I manually logged into Dakka for the first time in three months yesterday, because I bothered to reset the password I forgot... that long ago .

I also translate this 'coolness' to original ideas and impressiveness. Not the brooding, Brando brand of cool. Battle report shots I usually mark 'NA' for painting, but occasionally give a coolness score. Basic minis I generally give Coolness 5, though if the painting is stunningly bad I can be inclined to give it less. An awesome conversion with an unfinished (or rubbish) paint job can score high on 'cool', regardless.

I just uploaded a bunch of larger pics, and when I view them on the first level of zoom, there's some weird stretching on like the right-most 5th of the image... it goes away at 100% and higher zooms, but shows on the first 'level' of zoom for a bunch of the pics.
