Cheers for the comments folks.

George, the red is done using mechrite red washed about three times and highlighted back up. the knights are done with badab and the horses are done with sepia.

They're pretty much finished! I just have the banner to do and they'll be ready for some varnish action. Then it's time to move on to the next unit. Here's how they stand right now:

Dammit. This is reminding me that:
a) I really need to put some time painting my High Elves.
b) I really need to get better.
c) High Elves need new horse models.

Those Chaos horses are gorgeous. Great stuff. I may have to "borrow" some techniques with the red for my Dragon Princes.

The almost finished unit is simply stunning. I'm struggling to keep with my idea of doing simple metal armor on mine now :(

Get the standard done also to give us complete view of the unit.

They look fantastic.

What was your method for the metals? Especially the Bronze/Gold.

I like it better than the Bronze or Gold out of the jar.

As always, cheers for the comments and compliments.

Some replies:

Vyper, the banner is free hand, the folds in it would make applying a decal a nightmare x.x... I think that's the largest freehand I've done on a model so far too now that I think about it!

skrulnik, the metals were done using the new washes. For the gold I went with chainmail, washed heavily with gryphonne sepia, and finished off with some shining gold on highlighting the spots with mostly silver showing through. For the silvers, I used chainmail washed with badab black and highlighted again in some spots with chainmail to give it some depth.

Great unit, I quite like the freehand on the banner. You're making not restarting my WoC army even harder.

Forever alone

Awesome way of painting armour; good thing I haven't started yet!

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

OHHHHHHKAAAYYYY....

It's been FOREVER since I worked on these guys, but I'm REALLY digging on the army and the game so, here we go again.

BUT, I'm at a stalemate. I want to paint my Marauder Horsemen to get them out of the way and on the table top, but I'm really having 'direction' issues with them. I worked on the one marauder a long ass time ago at work, didn't like how he was coming out, and haven't touched the army since! And since they're a helpful testbed for the characters, I want to work on them before hitting my big mammajamma Khorne Lord on Juggy ^_^.

Here are some quick shots of where I'm at:

As you can see, I'm really at an impasse. I just don't know what to do with the model to make it more interesting 'fun'. The skin tone is rather dark, but I wanted him to be tanned, I'll do different skin tones throughout the army, I hate doing the same skin color all the time on every person, it's just not true to life!! The colors are almost directly from the Khorne Knights, and I think that's the issue. Where they were able to rely on the use of metallics to make them interesting and fun, these guys only have a few metallic bits and pieces.

So HELP!!

Tattoos... Woad for the Woad god.

Reduce the armour back to more natural armour colours and make their hair and beards brightly dyed.

They'll benefit from a more natural look than the strongly coloured chaos warriors IMO.

I'm thinking of going to an all metallics look for them instead of the deep reds of the Khrone Knights. I can use washes to tint and add color to them, in fact I'm thinking Devlin Mud would be a good color.

The tattoos are a neat idea if I can execute them properly. The hair and beards will likely catch some nice bright, yet more natural, coloring.

My biggest thoughts right now are:

Should I make the horses more natural than the stark black of the knight mounts?

and

Should I use a brown leather look instead of the stylized black brown I have on the Knights and so far have used here?

Looking pretty good grey_death. I prefer the more natural look of horses. Still make them look evil or chaosy but I'm not a big fan of whole army has the same color of horses. I'm doing a wood elf commission now and I had to do 30 horses and I had a lot of fun doing research and painting all the horses in colors you would find on wild horses.
Are you planning on doing anymore to the bases or leaving them dry brushed gray?

Lighter brown for the leather.

As to the horses, far more natural colouring, like steppes ponies mongolian style. All this exercise in 'realism' for the marauders will emphasis the otherworldly power of the chosen cav of doom. Keep some linking colour in the unit to tie them to the Chosen but really understate it and on only one item or something?

**added** if you take the horses back to a quite natural selection of colour, you can also add warpaint to them, red handprints etc to compliment the tatoo/woading on the marauders themselves.

Thanks a ton for the response guys ^_^. It's really helped me reshape the look for these guys into something more pleasing and more fun for that matter.

Shaman, I wish I knew o.o...I always end up using different color variations for pretty much every skin tone I do at this point. I just mix and match until I feel the skin is 'done' and don't keep track of the colors! I like a different skin tone each time I sit down to do one.

littleboyblues, I really think doing the horses slightly different each time will give me a much more satisfying paint session each time I paint one. Goes back to my skin tones above ^_-. As for the basing, I was thinking of a simple static grass addition, but for 'tabletop' this will do for now. I can do the grass or additional details all at once.

MGS, I'm going to use the more natural/random horse color patterns for these guys. I had a vision of the 'wild horses' of the Native Americans from old movies, and I think that will fit nicely. I will be however keeping them do a darker tone with some splash brightness here and there. So expect some fun plays on the colors of the horses. I had also thought of the warpaint thing, could be a fun additional detail.

++++++++++

Some progress finally:

Still a lot to finish up. Just wanted to show where the model has gone with the new direction!

Really beautiful, I am always marvelling at how smooth, even and 'comfortable' your colours go on over much darker colours without 'show through'.

I think seeing this bloke now, that the warpaint and tatooing can include the sacred red worn by the chosen, to link him back to them and the overriding basis of the army.

Just 'IMO' though.

Thanks MGS, much of the 'smooth' look is just from building up my colors, that and thinned out paints.

+++++++++

I've made some serious progress with the boy. I think he's pretty much 'done' barring warpaint/tattoo work. Sorry for the terrible photo...my cell phone doesn't like too much light apparently and I am too tired to try again. I'll get a better pic tomorrow if I can find the camera battery charger...

4 more of these to go ^_-. Luckily they'll be much faster than this one was. I hate working out a new color scheme some days...

Looking forward to the completed unit and keen to see what you do with the tatooing.

I am to assume we'll be seeing that amazing model of the lord on jugger in your army?

Perhaps also the DP from Forgeworld?

@Grey Death: Awesome paint job!! The marauder looks amazing! Have you played the army yet, or are you waiting to get it all painted first?? What is your army list? I have thought about doing an all Cavalry chaos army for sometime.
