Not saying they are lying, just plain old hallucinating.

I remember hearing about a scientist who noticed that the experiences described by near-death survivors resembled the experiences described by astronauts and test pilots who maxed out on the centrifuge. It seems likely to me that loss of blood to one's brain creates a fairly consistent set of hallucinations.
