Don't always assume the older guy knows the rules, either. It's easy to mix up 5th ed. with older rules. I know I've played some 'older' rules because we agreed to do so.

Well I don't really "Play" so the only other 40k people i ever see are in GW when i venture in for paints and what not. There is a wide range of age's in there. A lot of Younger people but i have noticed there normaly around the LOTR table. the painting area and 40K boards see to have an older group.
I Find the Older playes so much more helpful and when the GW staff are busy one of the many Gent in there always step up and offer to help me figure out what ever it is that has me puzzled.
i don't think there is any age restriction on doing something you enjoy. The TWERP game club *the worlds easiest roleplay system* ranges from 13-80 so if they can do it so can we

NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER SURRENDER!. The two guys I enjoy playing against most are over 40. I would say that if it wasn't for the Veterans in the community, the hobby wouldn't be the same. What's the saying? 50 is the new 40? If you want to play you'll find a way.

I just turned 39 last week and have been involved in actual miniature wargaming since I was 13. (as opposed to just playing with toy soldiers) I'm a very active player who is fortunate enough to live in a city with thriving communities for both historical and fantasy gaming. I don't see myself stopping this hobby any time soon. To be honest I'll probably be wargaming long after I have had to finally give up my more physically demanding hobbies like reenacting and airsoft.
I'm quite a bit older than most of the local 40k players, but I'm far from the oldest gamer I know. I play every Friday with a core group of older veteran 40k players at the local FLGS. We jokingly refer to outrselves as the "old fart 40k league" and have kicked around getting custom t-shirts for tournies. The average age of our group is 40 and we have two players in their mid-late 50s.
Also, one of the players in my D&D group just turned 60.
So no. You are never too old for this sort of thing.

Phew!
There was me thinking I was getting a bit old for this kind of thing! (Turn 38 next week)
I, too have been playing since I was about 12. Mainly D&D back then.
Our group is all around my age, and we mainly play table-top RPGs but 5th Ed. has brought us back to 40k.
I dug out my old WarHammer 1st Ed. books, just for nostalgia. Quite a different game, back then.
Our local gaming community (loose association of role-playing-groups, clubs, wargamers and hard-core LARPers) ranges from kids to OAPs.
I was quite surprised to venture back into the local GW store and find it was not TOTALLy populated with squeaky-voiced midgets teenagers. Mainly, but with a few "mature" gamers such as myself

I turned 33 just a month or two ago (see, my memory is going already). I'd class my self happily a grey-beard, but rules-wise I'm not as good as I used to be.
There was a time 18 or so years ago I could tell you every range, modifer & strength of any weapon in the RT book. Now, I have to keep the codices & rule book close to hand due to infrequent playing.
I tend to go through fits & starts of 40K & other gaming activities but the last year or two has seen a prolonged bout of 40K activity. Mostly it's about painting up minis, but as several of my freinds are all into 40K to one degree or another there's always the potential for a game every few months.
If you're having fun playing 40K & harming no one then whatever you do is right.

The last couple of times I went into a GW store (my local one being Milton Keynes) I felt distinctly uncomfortable - I had trouble telling the staff from the kids in there. I'm knocking on the door of 39 and in future I shall make all my purchases via the interweb.

I play 40K, Warmachine/Hordes and I am 59 years old. Will be 60 in a few months. Been involved in gaming for about 30+ years. At my LGS I am the oldest in our group which range in age of 14 to 59. Now there are some other old timers who play D&D and card games at the same store, but not 40K. The kids don't know how to take an old guy, but the over 20 age group will throw down at a drop of the hat, and are always ready to play.
I have found that building the models and painting them helps me forget the real world, (Work). It also gives me an outlet to keep me active.
So there you are never to old for 40K or Warmachine or Hordes.
Play as long as you can.

Average age in clubs can range greatly, check out other clubs in your area and see if they have older crowds.
But posting a flyer is always a good idea.
The best thing about being an older gamer is that you usually can find one guy who has a good 40k area in his house. Then if you can all go there, have a couple beers and play some 40k
But, if you can find some adults at your FLGS, then you have even a better chance of meeting more people.

I'm 23 and I usually play older guys. It annoys the crap outta me when I hear "How long have you been playing?" with somewhat of a shock as I pull out my fully painted, WYSIWYG CSM army. I've even gotten "well, at least you don't play like a noob." I know I've only been at it for 2 years, but really? The age thing is important and nothing is more annoying than having an immature opponent who, assuming he knows the rules, doesn't offer much of a challenge, but noone has given anyone the right to age discrimination either. It's annoying. Older guys aren't automatically better than younger guys; I've seen more old guy rules and fluff lawyers than any other age group, and you can't tell me they're fun.

I think that when you forget that dice are six sided and that the game is about fun, thats when you're too old to play.
Just remember: Game is fun, Dice have 6 sides, game is fun, dice have 6 sides, game is 6 sides, dice have fun...
