Not as cool as a CHAINsword by half. At all. Sorry!

Build it!

I strongly do not recommend it particularly not with the flimsy little chains on them, you'd need a much more beastly chain.

How about two chains running side by side in oposite directions, same effect as the bread knife, but still a chain?

Critical problem is going to be that you dont want a current chainsaw blade, you really want something with thinner straight teeth rather then the shape they are on a chainsaw.

Damn it, you got my engineering mind working on it now!

My comments are my own, and mine own alone. If you have any complaints, please report to Mr Spanky who will take them down for you.....

you mght be able to cobble something together using a smallish chainsaw, or using small motors, get a truly underpowered version of a chainsword.

as an actual mechanical engineer, with todays motors, the 40K version of the chainsword is not feasable. you are talking a extremely high strength chain, and an equally high torque motor that has an incredibly small form factor. There are a lot of factors that would make this project extremely difficult.

That being said, i'd be interested to see what you can come up with. Even something that just spins a small chain around some sort of "blade" would be extremely interesting. Go for it!

(i'm just listing what I see as challenges to making an actual combat worthy chainsword. a mock chainsword that could run is a different)

Well i've just developed a brand new phobia.
I NEVER want to be on the recieving end of a 'medical' chainsaw.

Two chains moving in opposite directions seems like a bad idea in practice. Those chains have to be a little loose of the saw to function, and if they flopped into each other when you started it up...

My biggest thing is, Yes it will cause serious trauma the first time it hits anyone. The only issue is with the technology today either the chain binds or even worse, snaps as it is slammed against the target. I've got 5-1 odds that the first time its used against a target with any amount of force equating to a true sword swing it explosively snaps the chain into shrapnel, jams the motor, cog workings inside and becomes nothing more than a blunt force weapon after that.

That and I seriously doubt anyone I know could weild it one handed and swing it hard enough to get the desired effect, and I know some pretty big guys.

Good luck witht he build though and can't wait to see video's on You tube.

I've actually thought about this in the past, and waaaaaaay more than is probably healthy. Insomnia for the win XD

Anywho, as has been stated multiple times in this thread already, a chainsword that operates similar to a regular chainsaw would not work. Plain and simple. The basic mechanics of a chainsaw are designed to make them slowly chip away at things, not actually cut through them, and never at high speed. In addition, the way a chainsaw is designed would make it extremely dangerous to swing around. The chain would come off the first time you swung it, and would most likely kick back and kill the user.

THIS, on the other hand, would actually have a slight chance of working.

Sorry for the crude MPaint, don't have a scanner so I can't show the sketches I did years ago when I first came up with this. Like I said, waaaay too much time thinking about this

Anywho! Here's how it works. It's mostly self-explanatory, but here's the logic behind it. The engine and back casing are there to protect the inner workings, make the chainsword safer, and mimic the WH40K look of a chainsword. The big differences are in the blades, the blade casing, and rotation. The blades, rather than being thick like on a chainsaw, are sharpened into blades on the curved side. The chain casing is much larger than on a typical chainsaw, to make it less likely for the chain to come off if it catches or bucks. On a normal chainsaw this part isn't very large, and serves only to keep the chain from slipping in normal, controlled use. With this design, it could be used much more aggressively and violently.

The most important change is the blades themselves and the rotation of the change. On a normal chainsaw, the blades are uniformly thick, and in this design the chain would rotate *clockwise*, so the thick points can chip away at the material. In this, as I said, the blades are actually sharpened down on the curved side and in this image rotates *counter-clockwise*. This way, the chainsword will work by quickly slicing away with multiple blades.

The only thing I can't decide is whether this design, or to reverse the blades and have them rotate the other way so it cuts up rather than down. In this design, it would facilitate a more natural cutting motion when you swung it, but it would be more likely to be pulled away from you, and you'd have blood and gore shot towards you. The other way, cuts away so there's nothing shooting in your face, but wouldn't cut as smoothly.

... yeah... waaaaaay too much time for me to think...

Only fail I see in your logic is the rotation thing. Chainsaws rotate in the same manner as you are showing your chainsword diagram with the teeth rotating toward the handle. This allows for the teeth to 'bite' into the wood and if the operator looses grip it is pulled away from him, not slung into the user. If they rotated like you are saying the first time it snagged and stopped hte blade it would slam back against the user.

Other than your thoughts on normal chainsaw rotation you are spot on, now to just deal with pesky idea of how to keep the teeth from breaking or the chain snapping when slammed into the target. The sheer mount of physics involved would tear it apart.

I think most of you are loosing sight of what it is a chainsword is suppose to be used on. FLESH! Im sorry but being a dumb kid once, my brothers and I used to play with chainsaws. And surprisingly they are WAY more durable then any of you are giving credit. "one swing and the chain would pop off" your crazy. Ive hacked away using a chainsaw as an axe it the worst is it bounces off of a hard surface if the teeth bite to hard.
BUT THATS ON WOOD! Flesh on the other hand, would be turned into liquid being hit by a chainsaw. sheesh

A "Harlequin's Kiss" would probably be easier to make and get working properly, just as lethal with less risk to the user. Mono-filament, no, but you could probably use 1/8 inch steel cable. You'd only need a small motor to un-spool the cable AFTER the syringe point penetrated the target. With proper gearing for high torque, very nasty I imagine. Ground meat anyone? Try it out on some large road kill.

haha funny pic. yes chainsword backfire is very bad and messy but using a chainsword is very messy, both ways you have blood and gore, darwin awards are awsome. make a video of both the making and use..so if you have an acident we have video evidence for the award and a warning for the next por sucker.
joking build it!

Just a thought: Have you considered using a chain from a motorcycle's transmission?

It's a hell of a lot beefier than anything you'd find on a chainsaw.

Thought #2: ummm... how do you intend to power this thing? I realize that it's a nifty idea on paper, but it seems like with all the conjecturing on the blade, nobody has taken into account that you still need to be able to get fuel to the motor no matter where in the reservoir the fuel ends up due to centripetal force. I don't think the issue would be chain-related injury, so much as it would be not actually being able to keep the blade spinning.

Things I've gotten other players to admit...

well i saw something like that once ...
.
the guy used a quite small chainsaw and converted it by simply adding a new blade and a longer chain. he was able to hold and control the chains speed with only one hand.
but in fact it was damn heavy. i think the initial reason für building it was not to build chainsword, but to design a tool for his hobby, which was creating sculptures out of wood.
-
but to be honest i think this project is a quite easy one.
i would use a 3.xccm-motor from an rc-car with e.g. 2.1 hp. and redesign the blade from a original 80cm stihl defaultblade by making it thinner and by adding a smaller toothwheel in the front. the tank could be integrated in the handle. for safety purpose you could close the backside of the blade like the spacemarines did it ...
if you're more the chaos guy, leave the chains track open on both sides.
as chain, simply use one from a odrinary chainsaw and remove as many elements you have to to make to fit to your blade.
the only problem i see is the clutch and the exhaust. of course could this be arranged somehwere arround the handle, but i think it would not look good in the end, but very brutal ... lol ...
so if you don't care about the sound go for a brushless system with a highpower batterypack installed directly in the handle and one or 2 motors mountes at the blades sides. the drivecontrol could be connected to a small small switch that can be controlled with one of your fingers.
...
so the project itself wouldn't be to complicated to realize ...
but the question is: what for ????
-
to be honest this seems to be a cool idea and a funny project .... on the first look. but if you start thinking about it it should become clear, that such a machine will become extremely dangerous to use, simply because of the fact, that this blade will always cut, not matter how hard it hits. further in contrast to normal swords this beast will be hard to control because of the spinning and rotating parts. additional to that it will behave completely different as soon as it hits something, than a "dead" blade does.
if you ever cut branches from a chopped tree with a small chainsaw and because of pure stupidity tried to do by holding the chainsaw in one hand only, you know what i'm talking about. in the worst case the blade jumps back from one of the branches and strikes directly back at you.
and i think keeping a device under control, that has the shape of a sword and being held in only one hand is not possible.

This is going to be hard to explain... I have no decent sketching abilities either so you'll have to try to understand it.

Yes, we've all seen the casing on ONE SIDE of the chainsword. What if you also put on a layer of material along the front as well, close to the actual chains, that went over the whole chain. You put a slit along the middle of that and attach thinner, but still sharp, teeth to each link with a normal tooth. Now, this gives it a better way of hitting something because when you WHACK something with this, it won't be pushing the chain back against the piece it rotates around. Instead, it pushes against that second layer of material there and you hit that, but the chain keeps moving how it should.

Any thoughts?
