I'm going to feel saddened if this has been done before, but I've decided to take it on if it has not, and only if it has not. The question does indeed remain... Has anyone made a fully functional Chainsword? I'm not talking made of foam. I'm not talking for show. I'm talking a fully functional, cut up some Xenos, and bathe in their entrails Chainsword. I've seen a Rhino and a whole bunch of non-working props, but nothing "real".
I've got the kinkering and know-how... And unfortunately the time.

As far as I know, it hasn't been done and is also theorized impossible. To get a motor to move that thing and still have it in the shape of a sword, as well as not grinding itself up when the chain comes loose, is a problem widely known. Good luck and I hope you succeed. Oh, and I'd try a pre-heresy chainblade before the 'modern' ones. It seems and looks easier.

Alazahr are you familiar w/a pole saw pruming tool? It's a chain saw that has the engine down on the bottom inside the "pole" is a shaft that drives the the chainsaw part @ the other end. With a lot of cutting & tinkering you probably modify a cordless drill & put the chaisaw part on the end, but a pole chain saw is like over $500 for a good one.

Um its a very cool idea but a chain sword is really just a chain saw with a cover on one side a very small engine (so it fits in the handle and big nasty teeth
Make a Chain fist by putting a guard over a chain saw LOL

To make one could be a a simple thing or a nightmare. I would have to say is get your hands on a functional logger style chainsaw, then make some sort of metal cover on a side so you dont trip and kill yourself. Move some of the handles so it forms something along the lines of a shaft or hilt. you may have to make a side grip to keep it steady but as for a sword... I could see making one.

The really awesome thing about the concept of a chainsword is it strips out any physics involved and throws it out the window for cool-factor.
If anyone has ever used a chainsaw in real life you know us mortal men need to use 2 hands to keep it under control. Now imagine taking said chain saw and banging it against someone. Yes it will kill them, yes it will leave a bloody, gorey, stain, but its also gonna bite home and launch itself out of you grip as the spinning teeth grab purchase into their body.

It would also bind up like a bitch. The chain needs a bit of momentum before it can cut anything. You can't lay the chain on something (of any substance at least) and it just start cutting from a dead stop.
That's why Leatherface always waves it around above his head a bit before attacking...

You have a very valid point there
But what if the opposite occoured, what if the CS stopped or went idle 5 to 10 secods after making contact or once the pressure was removed

Stopping a saw once it's going in, raises the spector of it getting bound in the cut it's making..
Chainswords, as described, use unreasonably strong materials, made into absurdly large cutting surfaces, powered by insanely light but powerfull motors, for an effect that gamewise (with the exception of Evicerators) is no better than punching the guy in the nose with brass knuckles..
that being said, you -might- be able to make a semi-practical Chainaxe with today's tech, but not with the perforamce of the 40 version..

As much as i have always love the CS there is something dark and sinister about a CA that makes it that little bit cooler.
And if you were to make a CA you would be able to swing with that extra force how ever you could not hold it against the target like a sword

Um, no.. frankly, you can hold a chainaxe to a target probably -better- than you can than with a sword.. swords are for accuracy, long handles are for force, holding something to a target once you've hit it, is -all- about how much leverage you get on the handle...

Whoa, you either dont get out much or your thinking of the wrong thing. Firstly, $500 bucks? Try closer to 60-70 for a good one. and the ones Ive seen dont have some crazy mechanism inside the pole. Its all on the end of the pole. Think a chainsaw but smaller, and on a pole. Thats it.

Also I think against flesh a chainsword would work perfectly. He wants to make a for real chainsword, I say go for it. Any of you that says "oh it wont work right blah blah blah" I say ok smartasses how bout you let him take a few practice swings at you and lets see how bound up, bouncy offy (yes thats a technical term lol) and useless it is.

Allthough the idea of making a RL chainsword sparks my interest as a mechanical engineer. However I don't recomend anyone without proper knowledge of engineering, hands on experience with chain saws and a lot of common sense to actually have a go at creating one.
Two many people have been seriously injured while working with a regular chainsaw. And then a regular chainsaw is still a thoroughly tested product made by big companies.

Instead of making it like a true chainsaw/chain sword, try doing it like a larger version of the electric power knives.
Rather than having a continuous chain providing the cutting force, the "blade" consists of multiple parallel cutting blades that vibrate longitudinally creating a forward and backward sawing action rather than the continuously rotary cutting action of the chain.
Damn, Alazar beat me to it.

The tech is already there, you'd just have to make it robust enough to call a "sword" rather than a "knife."

job done.
and you can even use it around the house
That would make Thanksgiving interesting. Offer to cut the turkey, disappear for five minutes, come back as a Space Marine w/ a Chain Toothpick in hand and scream at the turkey before you spray meat everywhere.

P.s. I am still contemplating it.
Lol. Chain toothpick. That did make me laugh.
