Actually, orks are the only good guys!

Tau are probably the least evil (Evil in the traditional Westernized sense) they are merciful, work as a whole, "Demz Grater Gewd," accept all races, and peaceful.

There is no good and evil in 40k.

Orks are probaly the least evil in 40k, there beliefs never changed, the chaos are evil because there betrayed the imperium, tau are getting there, evil is change. But if nothing changes, does anything realy change?

Chao's doesnt always have to be evil, just Chaotic well atleast in my case. My marines are just stoner's chaseing the dragon but the dragon tell's us to make high frequency weapons, kill those that would hunt us as "Traitors" at the same time hunt down and kill the foes of my patron god and uhh capture Sisters of Battle for uhhhhh Tea??.

The question "are Chaos Marines evil?" is a hard one to judge, partly on the basis that it's hard to judge "evil".

Many people have said the Marines betrayed their oaths to the Emperor, they're evil. Firstly, not all Chaos Marines have broken their oath to the Emperor. Some never swore to him in the first place, and therefore could not be oath-breakers. Secondly, they were bound by their oath to obey their Primarch. If you're supposed to listen to a guy who's supposed to be vastly smarter than yourself, and he tells you to do something a little questionable, sensibly, you should do it. Even if they had stayed with the Emperor, turning on their Primarch, they would have still been breaking their oath.

Or take the example of the Alpha Legion, which, from my understanding of the Fluff, was told "You have two choices: If Horus loses the Heresy, Chaos will win and mankind will die over the course of several thousand years. If Horus wins, Chaos will consume itself, and be dead within (some (relatively) short amount of time) but the Empire will die with them." They sided with Horus for the greater good for existence. Since that time, their leader was "killed" by a normal primarch, and they've had to hang out in the Warp for ten thousand years.

Or the Razing of Prospero. The story is almost the reverse of Antigone. (sorry, Theater Nerd.) If your father told you to burn down your brother's house, and beat him up, would you? Does family loyalty exceed legal obedience? Especially given that the act your brother is being punished for is attempting to help the family? Russ and the Space Wolves can rather easily be judged as "evil" in this instance, and since the Thousand Sons were simply trying to defend their home, it's not hard to see how rebelling would be the "right" choice.

Personally, "are Chaos Marines evil" basically boils down to "why are they Chaos Marines?" I would not call Rubric marines evil, as they HAVE to obey Aspiring Champions. I would not call the original Alpha Legion evil. I would not even call Warmaster Horus evil, given the explanation for his decision given in False Gods. Would I call the World Eaters, who have modified themselves to the point where they kill without reason, to appease their god evil? Yes. But by the same token, those who kill psykers to fuel the Emperor are evil.

Some are Heros pushed to far, some broke thier vows out of horror of what they have become. some want thier humanity back or refused to kill innocents......
