im guessing that if the imperium suddeny lost the emperor but before the emperor died he defeated the chaos gods, and the beasts of the warp the tau could probably gain a long term alliance with the imperium along with the eldar to rejuvinate their dying race.

the eldar and tau definatly Get a long term alliance against the enemies that want to eliminate both.

orks may barter with the tau for shootas or then again upgrade their shootas

I wish i could see the Tau ally with another race but unfortunately being neutral isnt welcome in the grim darkness of the far future.

Crons, DE , nids and sobs don't ally ever.
(that I know of)

I just finished reading the first three Ciaphas Cain novels. In the first, The IG and the Tau work together to fight against heretics causing problems in a city being manipulated by the Tyranids. In the second, the IG shows up to fight some Orkz, but they awaken some Necrons, who discover the Orkz first, and the Orkz divert much of their force to fight the Necrons. Not a true alliance, really, more of a big melee (everybody fighting everybody else), but there are situations where two factions might fight a third at the same time, if not "together."

Temperaraly Tau will ally with almost anyone willing to ally with them. To (almost) quote a water caste "We will work with you to attack this threat to us both. You will find it will greatly increase our chances, you will find it to be, indeed, for the greater good."

tau and chaos can ally. Think about it, chaos tau?

And I can see DE and orks allying against SM. The orks would consider the space marines a better fight and wouldn't waste there time against puny elves.

The tau have been known to exterminate kroot after battles against chaos because it corruption of the genome, i doubt they would ally with them.

Lol. Chaos are the very Anathema of what the Tau Believe in. Chaos is all about Personal Power and Emotion, while the Tau believe in the Greater good and the Collective Whole.

Not to mention Tau register so little in the Warp the Chaos Gods and their Emissaries probably wouldn't notice them/give two tosses.

Tau have tried to ally with everyone (even Orks, which ended Badly as Farsight Well knows) and even the Nids (I remember a snippet about Water Envoys being Sent. I bet that ended Hilariously. I wonder what a Nid from tau DNA would look like? Or perhaps their isnt one because their DNA is so useless? )

I think, if the situation was THAT desperate almost anyone would form an alliance with anyone.

Even a wily necron god could deign to cease killing mortals for a second if there was something too tough for even him to handle.

I'm not saying that any of the ceasefires would be permanent. Heck, they'd probably fire off at thier "allies" with a little "friendly fire", but at least they wouldn't be killing each other for a couple of seconds.

Exactly! (Most) 40k armies won't ally becuase they 'like each other' ('cept Tau) they'll mostly accidently be killing the same big enemy.
