i started playing right after the launch of 3rd edition. there was a group of about 8 of us who were just learning how to play including two people who were serious 2nd edition vets tired of playing each other in their respective basements. of the 8, 4 had marine armies and were using the 3rd edition vanilla codex. i wanted to play SPACE MARINEZ but wanted to be a little different; in the corner of the new release section was a new marine codex with a bunch of red guys on the cover so i bought it. i had just become a blood angel player. i then switch to guard because it was the exact opposite: from assault, high armor, high leadership, medium guns ===> stand and shoot, low armor, low leadership, big guns. then speed freak orks because they were a mix of both... i won't bore you all with the rest of the armies in my sig but i changed an army a year pretty much just for variety (although i only played the eldar and tyrannids once, lol, before selling them!)

The first army I thought of playing was the Space Orks. I saw an old codex, maybe 2nd edition, and was smitten by their haphazard look.

After reading my first 40k novel, I wanted to play Space Wolves or Dark Angels because both were featured in the book.

I ended up playing as Ultramarines as my first army because of what was included with the Battle for Macragge box.

Orks because they are just lovably insane, which mixes well with the high-tech universe that is 40k. Always had a soft spot for them, in any game or setting really.

Eldar, much like the Orks, I've always liked in whatever setting. I like the elegant look of them, the sad story as well as some of the more macrabre models (ie Maugan Ra, Death Jesters and Harlequins in general).

I don't have an Inquisition army but only because I decided that starting a 3rd army before finishing my first two would be really, really, REALLY stupid.

Love the whole religious/victorian (I guess?) look of them, and their general look and feel.

I used to play SM and Orks since me and my sister shared armies and she loved painting I loved converting but now I also buy armies that look cool so I have Tau and Eldar and I'm going to buy tyranids.

Let me preface this by saying that I was a big fan of the Terrans in Starcraft, so I was completely sold on the Imperial Guard when I saw the Kasyrkin models and the Demolishers. Hands down, my favorite models in the game, despite GW having no love for the Stormies. Not to mention that it's extremly easy to write good solid fluff for a human army. I'm just not big on writing from the perspective of the xenos. The tanks are easy to assemble and difficult to paint to an acceptable standard. Conversion opportunities are endless.

I chose SoB because I wanted power armor and BS4, but not Space Marines. Hurr. Their fluff is interesting, the acts of faith keep every game different, they've got a very different sweet spot and style of play than IG, and the Exorcists are sweet.

Tau, because I'm a dirty yellow anime fan Japanophile who thinks they're supa kawaii desu, apparently. I also love being treated like an donkey-cave who's deliberately out to ruin everyone's fun with my eyesore of an army and its horribly-designed models that don't fit into the background or the 40k aesthetic (yeah, because...you know, everyone has to play with the 'Eavy Metal codex schemes, so Tau all have to be brightly colored with no weathering, and a Big Brother-esque society with a rigid caste system, selective breeding, etc. and a "Join us or die" mindset also isn't grim and gritty enough), cackling maniacally to myself as I remove one model after another off the board without getting to do any serious damage to my opponent using my outdated codex (complete with useless wargear that has no function and units/rules that feel more like a 3.5 redux than a codex written for 4th), but annoying them all the same by simply investing hundreds of dollars into a non-Marine army.

I also had acquired a large amount of Space Marines off eBay in the early days so I could have a second army to play with/against since my brother didn't have one at the time. I never played with them and ended up giving them all away because I couldn't face the fact that I was a closet SMuf, and now I spend every free minute I have attacking Marines and spewing hate and vitriol to hide my own insecurities and feel better about myself.

The fact that they were one of those eBay auctions you're told to watch out for didn't help either. Not only was everyone badly assembled but they were primed really badly with this thick white paint that wouldn't come off even though I had soaked them in Simple Green for about a month.

And Chaos is by far the most "punk" army out there, both in look and fluff.

I always thought they were "emo"...they're more "angst-ridden whiner" than anything else, but maybe that's just me.

Tau - A shooty army with BS 3... no thank you.

Yeah, but BS4 would be OMFG BROKEN, and there's no in-between...

Eldar, originally because they looked the best and weren't covered in skulls.

For me it was eldar coz a friend played marines. I like the semi-intelectual fallen from the stars kinda thingy. Before the marines climbed out off their primordial soup the eldar were allready an empire that spanned the stars. And then...hubris.. in typical roman fashion And as another poster said, finesse over strength. Add to that the black library background stuff and the harlequins and i was sold never to change.

Growing up 40k was always Space Marines vs Alien Scum so when I started playing again last year I went with Ultramarines. They have the advanage of being cheap and prepainted (via ebay) so I could start playing straight away!

My second army is Tyranids because I used to play Space Hulk. It means I can play the bad guys and has fun modeling opportunities.

I have friends playing Orks, Eldar & Chaos Marines so wanted to avoid those armies.

My first still favorite army is the Dark Angels. Their fluff was a classic brother Vs brother story, and there was still so much more mystery to them that has yet to be reveled. I also loved how they had a Knight feel to them, with the Ravenwing as the horse mounted knights, and the Deathwing as the heavy armor knights tearing through their enemies searching for their fallen brothers. Plus green is my fav color. Their ranks have quickly grown to 50 Terminators, 100 all robed marines (mostly the old school metal ones), 30 bikes, 10 speeders, and a thunderhawk.

After almost 10 years of near fanatical Imperial armies (IG, DH, WH, ect) I finally branched out and started Orks this past year. Mostly for the hilarity factor of their rules and potential figure mods.

Other than that though...looking into the IG (thinking of picking up a battleforce and codex next week or so) cuz of how gritty it is. I feel you can relate to them a lot more than SM (when you've got more implants than Michael Jackson and more muscles than Arnold Scwarzenegger with more steroids...not human any more )

Necrons, because I sold my Guard to buy a computer, and then I missed playing so bought an army I could assemble and paint really quickly.

Then also started collecting FW chaos renegades because I missed my Guard army, wanted to play them again but also wanted to do something different. I think if I had my time again I'd convert current models to chaos rather than buy the FW ones. They're a labor of love to assemble (lot of pinning and bits not going together right). They're just about all assembled now, time to paint!

I chose Tyranids to begin with, because I always have loved the pure DEATH aspect they have. Sure, Chaos wants to convert you to their cause, but you have to be alive. There is still something there is Chaos comes to town and takes over.

Tyranids come through, and everything is GONE. You just got wiped out of the universe. And the guys doing it looked pretty damn cool in the process.

My second army is my pure Grey Knights for a very simple reason: The Grey Knight Terminator is the most awesome looking figure that GW makes for 40K. Nothing is even close. So I got myself some Terminators and some Knights, and now I have an absolute TON of them, and I love to see them on the field.

I was out of 40k at the end of 3rd ed.. totally avoided the game, and developed this thing called "a life".. lol.

Then, while at a Yard Sale, my wife pointed out a box - Battle for Macragge - and asked "Isn't that the game you used to play?" and.. I was lost. Got it, plus almost 2 dozen Genestealers from Space Hulk era, from that sale, for a dead cheap price.

That was the September before the big Ork revamp in Dec 2007 .. and THOSE models dragged me kicking and screaming into the realm of Orkishness.

Bought Ork and Marine stuff with the occasional Nid trade on Bartertown, and since then, have collected Sisters of Battle and OOP 2nd Ed Eldar..

So, right now.. working on..
Space Marines - Omega Marines - painted and done - Purchased because you GOTTA have a Marine force..
Orks - Waagh Magshak - the New Orks are just soo cool
Tyranids - Hive Fleet Orkin - Space Hulk nostalgia from years back.. plus the new Carnifex looks very very macho
Eldar - Craftworld H'rshei - taste the rainbow - Elves in SPPPAAAACCCE
Sisters of Battle - Order of St Ursula - what is not to love about Nuns with Guns.. and Hot Chicks.. ?

and.. am now actively collecting with an eye towards Space Wolves in the fall.

Too much coolness to not have.. to quote Igor from Dork Tower .. "It MUST be MIME!"

I dread to think...

Necrons. Why? Because their evil metal skeletons from hell that can come back to life adn have guns more powerful than any other race in the game.

What other reasons do you need??!?!?!?

I have played just about every army in 40K except the eldar, Necrons and daemons codex in the past 19 years.

That being said I have always been drawn to the SOB and have collected and played with them since their release. Love the whole "nuns w/ guns" theme, zealous burnination, ecclesiarchal religous pagentry, etc., etc.

I have played Tyranids since 2nd edition as well. 1. Line them up in a swarm 2. Run forward 3. eat opponent. Love them.!

Orks have always called me from a modeling/hobby perspective (ramshackle savagery ftw) but I just started getting serious with them a few years back and the new kits are a a godsend!!!

I picked IG because of all the tanks and the hordes of dudes that go with them. My army was originally built to be an Inquisitor's personal army, but nowadays the good ol Inquisitor is sitting at home in his lounger ordering Xenos and heretics to be exterminated.

I also started a Salamander army because I like painting green. Melta weapons and flamers are also my favorite weapons so why not pick an army that mixes a lot of both. I think the Salamander corruption goes back to the Armegeddon Campaign in 3rd edition and their side by side battles with the Steel Legion and the BTs. Man that was a while ago.

I remember the stories of the Salamanders being sent in to fight on the Fire Plains (or something like that) and thinking that sounds like an army I could dig.

My second marine army was the Relictors, but they have vanished into the Warp many years ago.

I had a MASSIVE problem deciding what to go. I was stuck in a debate between IG, SM, and Da boyz. I wanted to go orks because of every reason listed and more but suddenly thought that i shouldnt, IG because who doesn't like tanks and a bunch of people believing in a friken GOD of technology, but i didn't have the money, and space marines were cool but i was still debating between everybody at the time. So i might buy black reach and use the SM's and they boyz that come with them, so they cnan be a basis for BOTH armies!

I played SM in RT to begin with, but then I saw the Eldar and liked them as well, so started collecting both (and it was more skirmish back then, so you could easily carry around both armies so you could teach someone else).

I still have the SM and Eldar and still play them both.
In 3rd, when the Daemonhunters came out, I dug out my old GK terminators and added to them (last time I used them, a squad of them WAS an army). I have around 4500pts of them and it is fine as it is.

I am currently building a small IG force. This has a dual purpose. I can add my =I= unts to it to buff it, or 'enlarge' my =I= army. I'm doing a 1500 pt force which is where it will stay. I'm neither turtle nor snake, and prefer a more 'combined arms' force.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

ORKS - cause I like da choppin and shootin!

I know it's weird, but the way Orks spell things got me! Trukk, Rokkit, Slugga, BIG Shoota.... It was a combination of this and - once I got the Ork Codex - seeing models like the tankbusta squad with a tankhammer. That is freakin hilarious, man. The conversions give me the warm and fuzzy as well. I just finished a mob of cybork nobs and am very excited to paint them. I have also done a scratch-built Snikrot which I think - for a noob converter - is awesome.

Orks are all around fun. I am constantly smiling to myself as I declare my attacks during a game. I just love saying things in Ork!

On the serious side of Orks...how frightening is it to consider your enemies' fears when they realize that all the Orks they just killed will return in a few years when their spores mature? Feral Ork WAAAGGGHH!!! As an Ork player - you ALWAYS win.

Over the years, whatever army looked cool to paint. I could typically build armies that would perform at least ok on the tabletop.

Currently, Orks. They have been a blast to paint and folks generally have a good time playing against them.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Before I started playing, my brother was reading all of the codices, since he was choosing what army to play. I had not yet decided to start playing at this point, though I had a certain amount of interest in wargaming as a whole. He kept reading me these hillarious bits about red paint jobs and psychic abilities. I pretty much started playing 40k BECAUSE of the orks.

Now that I am more familiar with other armies I still have no interest in changing for a few reasons:

A-Converting and painting orks is more interesting than anyone else. I have a Nob with an 'Uge Choppa for a leg, nicknamed "The Choirmaster" by the Imperial Guardsmen. My Mad Dok is a painboy with 3 arms. Space Marine bits frequently wind up on my units. Hell, my whole army is blue!!

B-They are easier to conceptualise in play. Just think about them this way:
Small-Medium-Big-Pretty Big-Really Big

And thats how you figure out what to do with them!

C-All of the other armies seem sort of lame for various reasons, except Tau and Guardsmen. I refuse to be called a fish-head, and I'm not going to paint an Imperial Guard army. The idea makes me want to cry. Orks are time-consuming enough as it is.

Edit: Now that I think of it, Necrons are cool too. They suffer from the same problem as Nids though: They all look the frigging same. Boring to look at and paint.

HEY!!!! Eldar are not permitted to touch lines so orkishly awesome, no matter how clever you may be. Eldar are forever condemned to have lines approximately as lame as anything said by an elf in LotR.

In a Society in which there is no law, and in theory no compulsion, the only arbiter of behaviour is public opinion. But public opinion, because of the tremendous urge to conformity in gregarious animals, is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by "thou shalt not", the individual can practise a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by "love" or "reason", he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else.

Played Space Marines back in the days. Must say that I really enjoyed them. But when I heard a friend was starting to play again, and choose marines I thought that I should get me a bunch of orks. I've always liked them, they're "random" and shooty. And my last game with my marines was me getting tabled by a really cunning player with a horde of well painted orks.

As far as the Chaos = Emo stuff. IIRC Chaos is more "metal". I recall them being tied to a lot of the metal bands in the early 90's. Some Manowar LP had the eight-pronged star as well, didn't it?

I started off playing Chaos because I always seem to go for the "bad guy." My first army was World Eaters under the old Codex. It's now been at least a year since I've played anything marked Khorne, and gravitate towards Slaanesh because I love the I5. I had a brief stint with Nurgle but didn't like the cost of Plague Marines. Fluff hasn't had a huge influence on me.
