Well, I accidentally started a Marine (of course) that will go straight to Ebay...I was gonna use it, but it doesn't fit. Besides, I haven't sold on Ebay since after GD 2008, when the economy really started tanking. I got a lot done in a couple of hours last night, and will work on him again tonight. Maybe some wip pics tomorrow.

As for the Orks...I'm about to start one of the nobs.

Here's a WIP shot of the smurf I'm doing for Ebay. Nothing serious, I just wanted to work on my blends. The back of the cape, and the exposed knee are not finished.

Snazz-D.

Is that Grey Death's battle damage technique on the base there? The sponge thing?

I wouldn't say that's Grey Death's technique, at least so far as he didn't pioneer it. The use of sponges/foam to create chipped paint or weathering has been around for a long time.

Great work as usual, Lunchbox! I love the use of the dark brown on the sword sheath and banner. It really makes that NMM pop. The blending is just super clean. I think the only nitpick I can find is the white on the helmet looks a tad flat. Overall it's a wonderful model!

You can never beat your first time. The second generation is shinier, stronger, faster and superior in every regard save one, and it's an unfair criticism to level, but it simply can't be as original. - Andy Chambers, on the evolution of Games Workshop games

I would LOVE to take credit for the sponge damage technique ^_-, but I just can't. I just simplified the whole thing to a very basic level for the purpose of a three step tutorial (which I really should update with better photos!).

Lunchy! This guy looks really great. I'm going to be painting him as a commission piece for a close friend towards the end of the year and this will be a great help to have on file! The red really has a nice rich feel to it and as always your nmm technique is near flawless. I'd love to head to Dallas to learn that bit from you some day ^_^;. I do agree on the helmet though, it feels a bit underwhelming when in the presence of the rest of the figure. Your basing is looking wonderful as is standard for you. I really want to get some of those beam pieces for a future project. After seeing them used so often by you and akaranseth, I can't help but need them in my bits box.

Is this guy an ebay bound piece? Commission? Or Singles entry for the future?

Thanks...the weathering was done with a regular brush.

This mini was just a practice mini for coloration, and blending. Thus, it's headed to Ebay. I agree with the helmet. In retrospect, I should have shaded it with bone shades, instead of grey-blues...it blah's it out.

The red on the cape is fantastic. So many people overuse orange when highlighting red and it destroys the color, but I love the way you've done it. The blending on the back is an excellent deep red, and the slight bit of orange-ish shades on the leading/light facing edge of the cape really makes the highlights stand out.

I'm not sure I like the dark stone color of the banner though, it tends to wash out the wonderful dusty slate blue you have on the armor. Excellent model overall though, if your goal on this was to work on your blends, the armor and cape are great and I would have to say mission accomplished.

Thanks!

The blackish banner was actually done for a reason...red was going to overcome the model with too much red, and blue was going to muddle the focus on the face. So, I chose a nice, dark-neutral color to add contrast from the blue, and brightness of the face, so it would remain the focal point. Often times I see a bannered Marine, and all I see is the banner. So, I wanted to make it look good, but not retina-exploding...make sense?

Makes sense to me.

I didn't realize Grey Death wasn't the one who invented the sponge technique, although I guess it isn't altogether surprising.

Yes...you need to make it up to the Fort Worthless area...and since I'm a teacher, it needs to be over the summer. SO: will we be expecting you soon?

I can realistically make it up that way next month. This month is a bit ridiculous right now with classes, clinicals and work. I'll PM you with a better idea of when I can possibly make it up there ^_^!
