Nothing.

I have a black templar army, which lets me play standard marines and black templar codex.

I have zero time to budget to another army.

I started a small ork army with AoBR to paint something different than space marines. I can go kinda overboard without looking too out of place. I like clean looking Marines and orks are good fun to weather and damage.

I recently started Orks, I was a space marine player, but then I realized how basic space marines were, there's really nothing interesting about them, I know this is highly debatable, but this is just my opinion.

For me:

1) I've completed (or mostly completed) other projects.
2) I'm bored with how my current armies play
3) I like the new miniatures
4) I think there is a 'good' build possible that would be fun to play

Were I to start a new army, it'd be a blend of model quality/aesthetic (VERY important - no one wants to play with an ass-ugly army), fluff, and playstyle. That said, I have so much work to do on my current two armies that I won't even consider starting something new. At my snail's pace, it'll be years before I have both armies fully painted and modeled to 2000pts and have even a dozen games under my belt with each.

1. The fluff, I mean seriously: there's loads and loads of this awesome stuff.
2. The minatures, because attention to detail catches everyone's eye ;P
3. I have a ton of extra time and money lying around

I have a bit of everything as i think every race is cool in their own ways. so i guess it really falls on what's new in the model ranges to excite me on getting a new list together.

I think its a combination of wanting to paint something new, looking at a different miniature line and things that are newly released

I like armies with a similar playstyle, but i really like different support units (ex play my guard as henchmen so i can use dreadknights and such)

The models coupled with the fluff, although the fluff side only interests me for 40K

I love some of the new DE models, but because I don't like the fluff, I don't see myself starting the army.
That & the fact of disliking GWs current price rises . . . but that is another matter

I start an army because people say they're pretty much unplayable and I don't know of that many other people who play them. And then after a while, I begin showing that an army is competitive as long as you play it right. Such as my crons and CSM

Mainly the modes, at least this time. I just started Dark Eldar since I love how the new Scourges and Jetfighter look.

The most important things for me are:

cost per point on the table (I'd really like to play Dark Eldar, for instance, but they don't really cut it in cost-effectiveness, sadly).

painting time (this actually correlates quite closely with the above but if someone offered me a horde of orks for free, I’d probably not accept because I’d lose the will to like getting them all painted).

This means I’m pretty much reduced to generic space marines (as I can add models to my existing collection and field differing armies) and Grey Knights, who I’ve been able to ‘recruit’ fairly cheaply in cash terms by going paladin-heavy.

a good background with good looking minis to back the background up. also has to be fun to play with, plus be able to suit my budget

I started off with Space Marines because they looked cool/easily accessible, now I'm collecting Tau because I like the contrast in style, as well as the fact they're a different painting style.

Space Marines are a lot more forgiving to paint

Really the same as why do you like such and such an army. I added other because I recently started a new army because it differs in play style from other armies I currently have.

I always find myself wanting to play a new army. The main reason I get curious is when I see the army play and how they work in person. Plus cost comes into play. Having a army that would be fun to paint is important too.

i recently began painting orks again. why? because i am tired of only seeing marines on the table. its nice to see something else for a change. The distrubing trend at the local shop of everyone getting on the space puppie band wagon makes me think i need to start up a DE list though.
