The Hammer of Witches
A new day, a new time zone.

That was the point I was getting at. It would be very hard to place terrain to make a bastion completely unassailable like this one is in any case where it and the impassable terrain were seperate pieces, unless you made a bastion sized island and put it in a lake of deadliest acid, or something else over the top like this.

Not at all. That is a walk in the park compared to the things I've been thinking up. You are defender so you get to set up the terrain. Maybe try different setups sometimes to keep things fresh...

SsevenN wrote:Interesting results on what people consider OTT in planetstrike.
My personal play experience with planetstrike (I've only been the defender, but have played multiple games) is that just about anything goes for terrain EXCEPT 'impassable'
Placement of impassable terrain has to be very, very, very limited.
A defenders terrain advantage can go from 'noticeable' to 'insurmountable' once you start tinkering with undestroyable, unavoidable barriers to scoring objectives.
It has already come up amongst our gaming group in regards to surrounding each bastion with tank traps. I have the models handy, it 'looks cool'. And doesn't seem too crazy. but supposing you go up against a guy who took 6 ironclads. You can just shoot at everything else, let the ironclad wreck your bastion, hide out inside and wait for the game to end.
Your terrain piece, if already built and painted, sounds like it could be quite cool. A tower on a tall steep hill with a pathway up, seems apropos for space vampires. What i'd say is to make sure that there are other objectives on the table, and that they aren't quite so redoubtable.
Of course, the best people to ask this question to are your regular opponents, they have the final word. I advise you respect their wishes, or you'll be short some PS opponents.
They'll probably suggest a compromise like I just did.

One thing that nobody touched on is your defensive guns. The guns normal bastions get are not twin-linked. I'd say that's a bit OP too.

Perfectly fair. We use a twin linked auto cannon and a lascannon for my games so I don't see why it's not fair to use a heavy and regular gauss cannons

I would say it's completley fair..apart from the bottleneck. The stuff should not be impassble, just difficult or dangerous.
Basically that means he needs to move his meltas up the stairs for a chance to take it down, and that can take time.

Easy way to find out and decide for yourself. Next game let your opponent use it as built and you try to take it. That is the good thing about PS. You build impenetrable fortresses, don't complain when your opponent pulls the same trick on you.

Thanks for all the comments folks, I appreciate it. I'm playing my second game as the attacker tonight(6th game over all?), my opponent will be taking advantage of all the terrain tricks and fortified positions I previously had availible. I'm looking forward to another intense match, honestly EVERY planet strike match is intense, it's my favourite expansion by miles. I've got 3 bunkers, 5 craters and 2 bastions to finish building and painting along with all the minis in my sig. (I'm getting VERY excited to play Dark Eldar as the attacker, it reminds me of unbalanced 3rd edition games with balance!) Anyway thanks again for the comments, and good luck in your PS games.

Why does your bastion have a floppy disk in the middle of it?

I have an old Laserdisc or two. One of which I've converted in to a clock (they came out in the 80s very trendy) To be honest in planet strike no building is unassailable. He should be kicking himself for not bringing enough to take it apart/ not taking it apart soon enough.

I would say it probably should be worth two bastions, have two access points, or be dangerous, not impassable. Perhaps two out of those three.
Were it me, I would say so long as the impassable terrain is <6" so it can get melta lovin', it is probably ok with just being 2 bastions. Two smashy templates right off the bat is a pretty good equalizer, and even C'tan are not impossible to kill to the point that he can't get one model touching the bastion for a victory point.

Okay guys. Thanks for the well thought out responses. I didn't get my second game as the attacker in yet, but I did get to see what I'll be up against. So now I have another question that I'd like your opinions on. My friend will be defending in the next couple days here. He will be running 1,500 points of orks including (x3)15 lootas, 2 in open-topped armor 14 bastions, with the ammunitions storage stratagem x2 (re-roll hits for bastions embarked units)). The third loota squad will be in a wagon parked in between the bastions. In the bastions with the lootas are two custom FF Meks. The rest of his points goes in to 30 man gretchin mobs and a mega-nob counter charging unit. The board will be set up as follows.. I'm going to be using my DE. My plan is to take so many F*ing lances it doesn't matter what he has in the bastions, but the KFF's really scare me! I'll deal with the gretchin with piles of small wyche squads and my HQ's will handle the MANZ. My stratagem will be x2 supply drops. That way any wyches that make it through the gretchin will have bastion popping abilities. I think that's an important part of the plan, because if the range game goes wrong on me, and he rolls like 15 5+ cover saves. (Which he HAS done to me more than once) I'll need the wyches to deal with opening up the objectives to silence the lootas. Anyway I'll let you guys know how the game goes. I'll be running lots of Tri-Lance Ravagers Mini-Wyche squads with tricked out Succubus', at least 2 bad ass HQs and I would -Like- to test out 6 squads of 3 Reaver Jetbikes with x2 Blasters each, but that might have to wait for next game. Anyway, what do you all think? Does my plan stand a chance? Is his set up as strong as it seems? (He absolutley raped a CSM list with this defensive stratagey) Thoughts?

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/249091.page my view on things to take for DE. Against orks your going to need to cut the units down to at least 10 men before it has an effect but still worth taking. Oh and don't for get to take blasters

The thing is, if I don't open up those bastions and get a charge on those lootas by turn two, it's over! by the end of turn two his lootas will have killed my 6 highest priority targets he could target. The only exception is if I can keep those damned things stunned every turn, which is my goal. Then pop one with a CC squad ready for the charge. That's why I'm running MSU's, to take away his lootas biggest advantages. I'm really not expecting psychologoy to factor in to this game much. It really all comes down to his KFF roles, sad but true. If he makes them, I'm dead, if I get through them often enough, I've got a good chance.

Well look on the bright side if he stuffs his looter in the building and you stun/shake the building they can't shoot (pg67) since it follows the same rules as a transport. Also if he has a unit on the roof +1 on damage roll (pg80)

oh and a small unit of mandrakes is a must if he forgets to put any one in the bastion. Why? they have funky rules that they are always deployed at the start of a game but are decorative till you reveal them (which you must do before the end of turn 3). Me I'd place one of there possible deployment by the building. Then reavel them selves and jump in on the first turn ... make him destroy his own building ^_^

I'm not sure mandrakes are functional in PS. It also says that the three representitive markers must be placed in your deployment zone. How would that work when the attackers deployment zone is non-existent?

Planetstrike is a very loose format, but one of the few rules it does have is that each strategem can only be taken once. Thats important because the strategems arent all of equal power and taking multiples of one strategem throws whatever balance there is right out the window.
Your original bastion is interesting, with its weaponry, huge number of fire points and built in terrain edge tho it should count for an indomitable fortress probably. Impassable terrain is usually pretty rare in 40k, using very much of it in planetstrike will probabaly be the biggest cheese factor people use.
Your friends map doesnt take into consideration that impassable terrain can be moved over by skimmers so just pick one of those map edges for your reinforcements and sail over the wall right next to his bastion area.

Why does my eldar army run three fire prisms? Because the rules wont let me use four in (regular 40k). |

Ahh but don't forget about the 60 + Gretchin squads that stand in a giant blob totally engulfing the area. : ) ...You can lose a tank in his gretchin pits they're so deep. And believe me, emergency disembarks aren't fun in that mess.. And thanks for the info about stratagems, I hadn't noticed they were limited to one selection.
