Also, make sure the protagonist wields a completely implausible large sword and he has a catch phrase every time he kills somebody.
That, and make sure that every time the protagonist encounters a new more powerful enemy, he wins only by busting out a secret super duper powerful attack that he didn't want to reveal.
A either make a sweet version of Castlevania, like a Movie. That 100% won't suck like most other project's like that IE "Turning Video Game's into movies"
Can never go wrong without a psychopathic anime girl that's going on a killing spree. Like Black Lagoon!

Have a kid who is (initially) an innexperienced trainer that encounters a wild and fantastical beast/amalgum and is able to capture that fantastical beast/amalgum by throwing a specially designed, mass-producible tool called a 'fantastical beast/amalgum ball' at it. If the fantastical beast/amalgum is unable to escape the confines of the fantastical beast/amalgum Ball, that fantastical beast/amalgum is officially considered under the ownership of that Trainer. Afterward, it will obey whatever commands its new master issues to it from that point onward, unless the Trainer demonstrates enough of a lack of experience that the fantastical beast/amalgum would rather act on its own accord. Trainers can send out any of their fantastical beast/amalgum to wage non-lethal battles against other fantastical beast/amalgum; if the opposing fantastical beast/amalgum is wild, the Trainer can capture that fantastical beast/amalgum with a fantastical beast/amalgum Ball, increasing his or her collection of creatures. fantastical beast/amalgum already owned by other Trainers cannot be captured, except under special circumstances in certain games. If a fantastical beast/amalgum fully defeats an opponent in battle so that the opponent is knocked out (i.e., "faints"), the winning fantastical beast/amalgum gains experience and may level up. When leveling up, the fantastical beast/amalgum's statistics ("stats") of battling aptitude increase, such as Attack and Speed. From time to time the fantastical beast/amalgum may also learn new moves, which are techniques used in battle. In addition, many species of fantastical beast/amalgum possess the ability to undergo a form of metamorphosis and transform into a similar but stronger species of fantastical beast/amalgum, a process called evolution.
Throw in some inept/borderline slowed villains and a group of sidekicks including an older brother type figure and make sure the original trainer never, ever loses a match and you will have a HIT!

remember, main characters are only allowed one parent....the other has to be dead, or out of the picture for a never fully explained reason- the remaining parent needs to have a bizarre personallity that makes you wonder how the kid actually survived their early years.
oh, and only 1 in 5 people are allowed a hair color found in nature
