He could have done it since the invasion of Italy took place well before D-Day. Several regiments and divisions were withdrawn from Italy after the Sicily campaign and were moved to the UK in order to supplement the forces that were to partake in Operation: Overlord.

Well the Germans started the war with a zerg rush through the Ardennes. All the Russians did was spam infantry and T-34s.

Sort of. People tend to look at the German super weapons and assume other nations weren't building that stuff because they couldn't. Truth is most other countries were more interested in fighting a war of scale, mass producing simpler weapons. There were more than a hundred thousand machine hours involved in each Panther. Meanwhile the Russians and the US were mass producing simpler, more robust tanks.

At the height of their power the Nazis had the entire industrial capacity of Europe at their disposal. To be defeated by the Soviets and US (and remember the US never came close to fully gearing their economy to war like the Germans and Russians did) is all about how utterly wasteful the Nazi war machine was.

So when you say how close the Germans came, I agree... imagine if they hadn't been run by lunatics.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Operation Torch November 8th, 1942 (North Africa)
Operation Avalanche September 9th, 1943 (Salerno, Italy)
Operation Overlord June 6th, 1944 (D-Day-Normandy France)
Battle of the Bulge December, 1944 (Ardennes, France)

His story is pretty amazing, and in fact I'm working on a book. The national archives have been pretty difficult to get information out of, becuase I'm looking to find out what specific units he was with. He passed away last year, and before he did, I interviewed him. Unfortuneately the only unit he could remember being in + he has patches, is the 3rd armored division. Since the 3rd armored division didn't take part in D-day, I can only assume that he was transferred to the 3rd armored division, after D-day, or after the war.

Washington DC

I have spent my entire adult life in the military.I was two weeks out of high school back in 92 when I left for boot camp. I know nothing else. Sometimes I wish I was just a regular civilian...but on days like today 9/11 I am glad I am still in and committed to my service and country. I am in awe of what the sailors, soldiers, and marines did before me and I do my best everyday to honor their service and sacrifice.

BTW,
Yes it is possible to have served in Africa and D-Day.
My Grandfather was in the 75th ID 291st Infantry Regiment, CN Company. Most of his unit was wiped out and was replaced with guys from the states in 44.
