I lost a crisis suit a few years ago to thet, in general though I dont think it happens much, more often people steal or accidentally pick up hobby supplies from stores, i've lost so much black spray and super glue from my local GW. As for insurance i've never known anyone to insure thier minis.

<sarcasm>
anyway, im sure with some clever thinking, you could put a lock on your carry case with the use of a drill and a few metal parts, could work...
My main problem with a gun case is the fact the GW I go to is in a mall. I don't think the mall security would take to lightly to someone carrying a gun case into a public mall
I don't think my models will EVER get stolen (and never have) due to the fact i carry my orks in an acer laptop case (it's worth like 100$ at the moment) and my Space Marines in a chess box cheap but effective considering that not a single model has broken inside the case's and the paint has never chipped
I do know someone who kept his models in 3 large gun cases and had his models stolen since someone broke into his garage where he kept them. Doubt a crook would know that they would be worth much money.

I had a GK Justicar stolen from a mall store while I was playing an apocalypse game one day. Pretty sure some thug kid mallrats swiped it while I wasn't looking.
I also know a guy who kept his army in a gun case and somebody broke into his car and stole it. The worst thing about that is that you just know the scumbag opened it up, said "what the f--- is this s---?" and threw it in a dumpster.

I go to 3 FLGS, one of them quite regularly, and I have not had my case or minis snatched (knock on wood). The only incident I have come across is someone had their SM codex taken, which is bad, but easily replaced compared to a mini you spent 3 hours modeling and 7 hours painting.
Cheers

Over the course of my life I have had not one but TWO armies stolen!
The first was a classic high/wood elf army, built out of early-eighties era Ral Partha minis. Most of the minis are now impossible to find outside of ebay, so rebuilding this army is formally next to impossible. It disappeared along with my stereo (which they were sitting on top of) when my apartment was broken into.
The second was my pride & joy, an all-metal FIRST EDITION Space Ork Army. The case they were in (as well as several dozen other items) disappeared when I had my stuff in a storage facility as I was changing apartments. Replacing them would be in the 'difficult, but not impossible' category, if not for the fact that I like the new plastic boyz better

I recently bought three ork Truks at a GW store, I was paying for a few other things, paint, brushes, black library stuff, and primer, they handed me the bag with the truks and I put it on the floor next to my leg. As I was paying with my credit card the guy at the register handed me the other bags, when I went to put it down with the truks I saw the bag was gone! The store was busy, who ever snatched the bag from me moved quick. The GW guys were really cool, and credited me.

When I first got into the hobby I had some "mates" who used to think it was cool to help themselves to my Epic miniatures, when my mum (I was only 9 at the time) confronted their parents they said that they had only taken them "because I had so many", which apparently made it alright.
Somewhat reluctantly I got the figures back (mostly damaged and daubed with paint). As revenge my mum informed the local GW store manager what sort of kids they were i.e. thieving little scrotes, and he subsequently perma banned them as he had his suspicions they were nicking from the store also.
These days I dont have any bother, I never take my miniatures within a mile of a GW store and only game with people I really trust. Also being the size of a brick out house I tend not to attract chancers
The last time I lost miniatures was when i mooved house and mistakenly threw out a bow which i thought only had tissue paper in it, it wasn't until a few days later (after the bins were collected!) that I realised it had contained several Chaos deamons

About 7 years ago I had a case stolen containing 2 slaan mage priests, a stegadon, a unit of 20 (metal) temple guard, about 30 skinks, 20 saurus, 24 genestealers, 20 (metal) gargoyles and a few things I have since forgotten. Yeah it sucked HARD.

I had somebody clean out my car about 4 years ago. I lost my Limited Edition Warhammer Fantasy bag, rulebook, all of my dice and templates, a 4th Ed 40k rulebook and a SM codex. From then on I never leave any minis or gaming stuff in my car.

wow the that happened to me is about a year ago i accidentaly picked up someone elses khorne berzerker after a game the really annoying thing is I havn't seen them before or since to give it back although at the time he got given the job of cleaning up afterwards (it was at the local club) but said that cause it was his first time he didn't know where anything is and why couldn't he do it pointing at me I had only been there once before and hadn't even worked out were the loo was let alone the broom so I asked and got told to work it out and be finished by nine, it was 5 to, amazingly I still go and still don't know where either the loo or the broom is.

I have no idea what the chance is of you getting burgled and it varies a lot depending on where you live and so on.
Your collection of figures can be put on your household insurance, or you can insure it separately as a specialist collection. There are insurers that specialise in collectable items.
Talk to your insurance company or a broker to find out your options.
You'll have to make a list of everything your own so if it does get stolen you can claim. With a digital camera this is easy.
The cost of painted items can be insured by reference to professional painting services.
Your insurer may not accept a high valuation of your painted figures if they aren't up to service standard.
I did not really read the thread. My miniatures, dishes (I have about $650 in dishes) text books and whatever comics etc I have are insured as "jewelery", $30,000 CAN. Once I have a house etc I will probably look into getting them insured along the lines of getting them re-painted, at least the half or so that is the "real" miniatures.
I just live in an apartment, my "contents insurance" aka "renter's insurance" or "fire and theft insurance" is about $17 CAN a month. It is "jewelery" and my computers and television are seperate. I pay dental etc for now via another company related to my current job although I will probably be changing that. Friends with the guy and everything.
Just since we're talking about it. I am a little worried about theft, but mostly because it is a waste of time to get them replaced and re-assembled again etc. But time IS valuable of course.

I've only stolen 2 armies from guys at shops, but I wouldn't call it common... I mean, no I've never stolen anything or had anyone steal from me. At my FLGS we actually have people leaving their iPhones on the table when they use the bathroom, leaving their armies in the back when they go to grab a bite to eat, etc. If anyone did something, we'd be able to figure out who it was pretty easily. I'm still cautious though.

About to sell my Black Templar army, I wanted one more go with the army at a local tournament. So I painted up another Chaplain to meet the 1850 point level (My Army was 1750). Went to the local GW to play. Had a game. Took video of the game. Chaplain was put down on the side of the table. People leaned in to watch the game. Three or four academy kids. Was taking video, game got intense with concentration. Game ended, great game shook my opponent's hand and packed away.
Looked all around for the Chaplain. Could not find it. Had Video of it about 20 minutes before the game ended..... So I proxied my old Ultramarines Chaplain for the tournament....
