There's a sign that says "You may buy all of the candy" next to ten pieces of candy.
If you buy any of the candy, you must buy all ten pieces.
You can buy as many pieces as you would like.

You may fire at your discretion and bearing in mind any hard rules on LOS or a weapon being unable to fire, up to all of your weapons, some of your weapons or none of your weapons, as you see fit.

They must all (those firing) be fired at the same target.

Exactly. "May" is permissive, allowing choice, as is "can" in this sense. "Must" is used for ordering, or obligation, allowing no choice. Choice. No choice

Permissive in the sense that you may choose to buy the candy. The word may doesn't comment on the form of the purchase you can choose to make.

It's common in Japan to limit customers to one piece of a popular new game or console, on launch day.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

In your base, ignoring your logic.

I don't like my options. You have:

If you buy any of the candy, you must buy all ten pieces.
and
You can buy as many pieces as you would like.

However the right answer should be:
You can buy as many pieces as you would like up to the total amount of candy in the jar.

Also, there is no price listed so I will say that I may buy all of the candy in the jar and pay 1 penny on an installment plan over the next 1,000 years with no interest.

Or, threaten him with a gun and take the candy thereby negating the need to "buy" the candy and the limit imposed on how many you can have.

Everyones a winner, you get the candy you want, and he learns a valuable lesson on writing clear and elligable signs.

I'm just gonna walk up and take 5 pieces of candy.

I was told that I may buy it, but I don't want to. I don't see a rule against not paying though!
