I see no real problem with this. He is basically stating a fact, and your opinion of people fighting for what they percieve to be an attack on their culture and their rights, is basically moot.

Tell me what you know about world news. Tell me what is being pushed in the mainstream media. Tell me how the internet is basically a safe haven for the "hidden truth". Call it what you want, but most U.S. citizens could give a flying feth about anything besides job security. Which is all well and good, but when you start talking about being informed on subjects that bear no relevance to that fact; you are most definitely spitting hairs.

I take his stuff with a grain of salt, never really been particularly outraged by anything he says.

The day that someone hacks a Furby so that it speaks only in Moore quotes is the day my life will be complete.

I don't believe his statement that Americans are stupid.

I used to believe this statement, but then I realized that a country of stupid people couldn't work. I do believe though, that many of us Americans are somewhat arrogant.

The best thing is the line saying "Is he a socialist?", in a way like "Is he a werewolf?", "Has he created a Hitler clone?" or "Does he smoke kittens?". No comment, really.

I find his hate of capitalism amusing considering it's what basically allows him to make his movies and live off of them

Capitalism allow MM-cheeseburger bonanza to:

A.) Dominate the market through slightly underhanded tactics.

B.) Brand himself to a degree that would simply be impossible without our advertising network; and gossip channels, that can be linked to capitalism because somehow the free market invented the internet as we know it... but not really though.

C.) Get all the way to the top of his field (and in his given field he is a giant (cheeseburger... the joke that keeps on kicking ass) among smurfs... seriously though) then take the option of contributing to what he feels is a very important set of topics.

D.) In many ways his stature does play a role in the conversations we have on a daily basis about the U.S. If there is a conversation about the U.S., chances are that MM has said something important about it (good or bad mind you), perhaps even made a movie on it.

And there are a few others... but simplifying his success to this way... and only this way, lacks any true meaning. When one of us reaches the success that he has already attained (well... I think a huge BBQ is in order either way, all of Dakka invited ), we can choose to do what we want with our money and brand, whatever that brand may be. Money is by no means the main weapon that MM is touting, it is just one of many options he has to use.

When you read the paper and you get to the Opinions section, do you just sit there discounting every piece because it is biased?

There's this idea that's crept into the political dialog that you can say 'bias' and immediately discredit every possible argument a person has made. It's a lazy approach, and will do nothing but keep a person cocooned inside their own narrow little worldview. It is alright to argue from a position of personal opinion. It is good to read such stuff, take in the author’s reasoning and consider its merits, then accept none, some or all of what was said. It’s the best way to form a considered world view.

That said, it is not okay to be lied to. Moore has presented things in his films that are not true, or were out of context and very misleading. The classic examples are Charlton Heston’s ‘cold dead hands’ line that wasn’t given at the Columbine ceremony, or Moore’s report of the bin Laden’s leaving the US in Fahrenheit 9/11 (Moore heavily implied the family was given special flights out while the flight ban was in place, in fact they were moved up the queue to be the first to fly when the ban was lifted). That Moore does these things is not good.

It’s one of the reasons I’m ultimately not that interested in Moore. The other is that I don’t believe his work is that insightful. Bowling for Columbine was very good (and very misunderstood), but Fahrenheit 9/11 and Sicko both relied too heavily on anecdote, and neither said anything that hadn’t been said better by other sources. Given the form line I’m pretty dubious about this new film, especially given it’s on a topic that Moore has spoken some genuine rubbish on in the past. But you know, middle tier film making likely to make middle tier film, who cares?

But I am very interested in the statements given every time Moore is mentioned, when that corner of the internet that reappears to point out how much they hate Michael Moore. The level of vitriol is quite remarkable. At the end of the day he’s just some guy making opinion pieces of modest quality, and there’s plenty of people making stuff that’s far more confronting who gain no attention at all. I have a pet theory that this Moore has become this object of hate because he rose to real fame with Bowling for Columbine, which was released when the US rightwing was at the peak of its power, and at its most belligerent. While the right has fallen quite dramatically, their footsoldiers still cling to the targets they were assigned back in the day.

I find it funny how democracy, in his mind, is not true unless it is something that runs an economy, country, business, etc. I guess he might be a genius in France....

If it is any consolation to the MM-cheeseburger haters, this movie will be torrented to high hell, and back, then to valhalla for a quick drink, and way way way back down again...

I find MM to be a whore for the leftwing. If he's knocking rich people it might be worth noting that he is very wealthy.

I love capitalism....

It brings me shops full of stuff, that I can choose to buy or not.

My thoughts on this film are, it's sheer hypocrisy. Moore will make millions more off of the capitalist system that he's lambasting.

I like to watch MM clips on occasion on youtube. Never seen any of his movies but the clip where he totally owns that religious cult for protesting at the funeral of a gay soldier is too hilarious (and effing true). If you need to protest gays do so somewhere that isn't a funeral. Tacky and tasteless regardless of how you slice it.
