I had an idea you can use. Pick an army you either will be facing lots or just don't like. Buy a box of a couple guys from that army and use them to make monsterous creature's base look better.

That's not too bad of an idea... I already have a lot of space marine parts lying around that I can use, and I definitely expect to be facing them a lot! Also on some of the resin pieces that are included in the basing kit there are SM helmets and the like, all clawed up. Should be fun to use those in the bases too.

But first, tomorrow I am supposed to have the day off so I plan on getting the 2nd carnifex done.

Some nice work on the bugs. I like the use of the Space Hulk broodlord. The yellowish scheme actually works really well on them.

I got some ideas for spore pods. I'll be posting them later as I try them out. For now, I'm gluing together one of the old boxes of gaunts (I got 16 for $20, plus the 2 ripper stands so I guess that's a good enough deal). I have a lot of painting to do before these are tournament-ready, but the state's big event for the year is coming up in march. I have at least that long to get them ready, I suppose.

Not so much a modeling update, but this thread needs a revival.

Played my first game with the new codex today, and I realized I still love my Broodlord...

The game was a 2000 point gloves-off-brawl against a very experienced Ork player. I don't have exact lists (they were made minutes before throwing down dice), but I remember that he had a large mob of shoota boyz, a biker squad (not nobz), 3 Killa kans, burna boyz, meganobz, a couple trucks, and a battlewagon with a deffrolla and battle cannon. Oh, and he had wazdakka on his bike and a big mek with one of those crazy cannons.

I was running a Flyrant with a Heavy VC and the BS + whip combo, a Tyranid Prime with a deathspitter and scytals, a deathleaper, 3 warriors with deathspitters, 10 hormies, 10 spinegaunts, 15 devourgaunts, 20 genestealers plus the broodlord, a pair of carnifexes with scytals and bioplasma, and 4 ripper swarm stands. Not exactly a primed list, but I wanted to see if I could cobble together a 2000 point list out of the models I already had.

Anyway, the broodlord and his boys were a power-house. They went from a squad of shoota boyz, to a squad of burnas, and finished up with a pair of killa kans, before finally succumbing to repeated blows from hidden powerfists and meganob attacks. High initiative, high skill, and rending attacks puts down just about any kind of close-combatant you can throw at them. Throw in infiltrating, fleet of foot, and the broodlord's psychic treats, and they are definitely making my A-team!

The Carnifexes were sub-par. They did manage to kill the bike squad and put a wound on wazdakka, but for a pair of expensive MCs I expected a bit more. Of course, they didn't get a chance to use the bio-plasma, so maybe it is only because of circumstance that they failed.

The Deathleaper is going to be useful in take-all-comer lists for assassinating psychic hoods or fouling enemy psykers, but his use in this game was cut short. The turn he arrived, he put a wound on the big mek with his flesh hooks but got run down by the battlewagon's deffrolla, which flattened it out pretty good. I'll need more testing to formulate my opinon of this guy, but it seems like his job might be accomplished by a lictor for cheaper.

Hormagaunts... I never really got to use them against anybody, as they died to pie-plates long before ever reaching the enemy lines. Needs more testing.

Devourgaunts are ok, but the Devourer is pretty spendy. The weapon costs as much as the base model, so it doubles their points. On the other hand, its S 4 and Assault 3 with a substantial 18" range, so it is probably worth it (especially when compared to a lasgun at S3 rapid fire at 12" for only a few points less).

Spinegaunts are cheap, but hardly worth it. If you expect to be facing horde or gunline IG, then by all means take them, but the S 3 AP5 12" spinefists just didn't cut it for me. I don't need the AP5 so much on a basic weapon, because most of my opponents are MEQs, so it wouldn't make a difference. I'm going with the devourer from now on.

Warriors with a Prime and Deathspitters are an awesome light fire support unit that can do decent in CC. Scytals aren't real great when only taken as a single pair, the bonesword and lash whip combo is definitely better, but it can chew enemies up pretty good with those Assault 3 weapons, aided by the Primes BS and WS stats. If I hadn't been trying to assault down a cybork nob squad with them, I'm sure they would have fared better.

Hive Tyrants are tricky.... my best advice is to REMEMBER TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT ALL THEIR GOODIES YOU PAID FOR, AND THEIR PSYCHIC POWERS!!! I constantly forgot to use his psychic powers, and his upgrades, and I paid a lot of dough for those. If you are going to take any sort of reserves, the upgrade for the +1 reserve roll seems darn near mandatory. My deathleaper didn't get there until turn 3, and by then the show was pretty much over. The assaults were pretty quick and brutal, and didn't take long to resolve. The tyrant went up against meganobs, and the bone sword worked beautifully. Take these over scytals every chance you get, and you will cherish your new power weapons that possibly insta-kill.

I'm still waiting on my zoanthropes to arrive in the mail, but now I have a pretty good idea of what other units I plan to make part of my semi-competitive list. Work will resume on getting all these guys painted and based up to standard, now that I know what I want to include. I'll focus on the ones that will be getting the most use, such as the genestealers and devourgaunts.
