QFT. Another vote here for the Eisenhorn trilogy if you want to see 'behind the scenes' and the Gaunt's Ghosts series for a more front-line setting. Both are, in my opinion, absolutely fantastic series =D

The gaunt's goasts, all og them, read them, or die.
Eisenhorn and Ravenor.
Crucible of war has some good ones in it, some are kind of depressing.
Cain is awsome too.

Eisenhorn trilogy......killer read. On a side note I'm reading the Blood Angels Omnibus and it's really good but I'm a BA fan so....

Eisenhorn and Ravenor Omnibi(The two Omnibus collections)
-Dan Abnett
Ciaphias Cain (Omnibus + 2-3 books)
-Sandy Mitchell
Horus Heresy Books
-Various
Dark Apostle and Dark Disciple
-Anthony Reynolds
Storm Of Iron
-Graham Mitchell
There are alot of other readable books and collections of short stories, I've only read the first Gaunts Ghost Onmnibus so I won't recommend it(it was good but don't know enough about the rest of 'em). Pretty much anything by Abnett is gold though.
Now that I think about it everything but Eisenhorn and Ravenor is what I've read recently. Oh and the Time of Legends books for Fantasy are pretty good also.

I would very, very strongly recomend the famous Gaunt's Ghost series. I am up to the second omnibus (The Saint) and I believe you will enjoy the action, twists and humour these books. I am looking forward to reading the next book (The Lost) and hope is is good. Even though they are 1000+ pages each I think it is very enjoyable. Try is out. FOR TANITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Straight Fething Silver" Tanith first and only
I have a reputation, Modile, a reputation as a fair, honest man who treats his soldiers well and supports them in the face of darkness. Potentially, that reputation makes me soft. It seems I understand failure and forgive it. Some, like Kowle, believe me to be a weak commissar, not prepared to take the action my rank demands. Not prepared to enforce field discipline where I see it failing. I am an Imperial commissar. I will enflame the weak, support the wavering, guide the lost. I will be all things to all men who need me. But I will also punish without hesitation the weak, the incompetent, and the treasonous.
I am a Commissar. I am empowered to deliver justice wherever I see it lacking. I am empowered to punish cowardice. I am granted the gift of total authority to judge, in the name of the Emperor, on the field of combat.
— Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, prior to the field execution of his uncle General Aldo Dercius |

If you were to want to read the Horus Heresy, what is the reading order? It looks like a whole mess of books.

You start with Horus Rising, however if you pick up one of the books in GW it lists them in order in the front - latest one is the Thousand Suns novel.
The Dark Angels book (first one) and the dreadful Battle fro the Abyss can fairly easily be missed - they add *some* info, but are frankly awful.
Fulgrim is still probably my favourite out of the series - it is an amazingly well put together story!
