Life without freedom is not life but a plea for liberty.
Knowledge without wisdom is fool's gold.
We can live without religion but we need spirituality that confirms the worth of Earth, ourselves, and others within a framework of freedom that guards the innocent from hostile minds seeking power for power's sake.
It's not a question of the group or the individual but how the group and individual co-operate together so neither is harmed.
Zombies and ninja for the win.

Ignorance is better than knowledge? That explains America pretty well then.
Superiority is superiority, implying that inferiority is a strength is lying to oneself. Value on the other hand is subjective, which is what I believe you are trying to say.

Let me establish this now, I'm not attacking any of you, however I am disagreeing with what some of you live by.
dogma wrote:
Superiority is only a meaningful word when considered in context. Hence, superiority is subjective. Its a statement of value with specific reference to strength, or ability.
It seems you don't know what he's trying to say, or even what you've said.
Look up the meaning of superior. It's absolute, not subjective, and it's a general usage, not specific. Example: What makes a Space Marine inferior to a guardsman?
dogma wrote:
I think you're simply reading the poetic tone, and concluding that the statement has no meaning. That's usually considered a horribly amateur mistake.
"It has been revealed to me that, if I act in accordance with my desires, I will be rewarded."
That's what the statement means, and its hardly meaningless. Its an elementary concept; basically "do what you want". But its hardly meaningless.
It's a self fufilling prophecy, pointless and nothing but a feel good. A means to do whatever you want because you feel it's right, free of negative consequences.
Golden Eyed Scout wrote:
Obviously you've never heard of an idealist.
I do hate when people use this line. You either make yourself look to be smarter than you are if they don't know what <topic> is, OR you look like a slow when the person you say that to has a Bachelor's degree in philosophy (minored in sociology) like I do.

1) Important things, like what? Who decides what is important? You? Me? Mob rule? FSM?
2) A fancy way of saying "I decide what's important/valuable/right and to hell with everyone else."
Your first says to be selfless, your second says to be selfish. I'm the fool?
|
As if on cue, you hear two people singing from the stairwell, and the door is opened and a pair of very smelly, very dirty guardsmen stumble in, completely drunk, and covered in vomit, and immediately collapse unconsious on the porch. You drag them to their beds, realising that they will not be waking up for some time. |

Life is like a card game, sometimes you get dealt a good hand, sometimes you are dealt a bad hand. Those that dare can sometimes exchange their cards in the hopes of getting a better hand, sometimes your gamble leave's you with a worse hand.
No matter what, you can't please everyone, so don't try and just do your best.
No matter how bad you think things are, there's always someone else in the world with worse problems than you. ( there are certain times where saying this is liable to get you lynched such as family deaths but otherwise holds true )
Some say the glass is half full, others say the glass is half empty, I say, who you hell has been drinking my water?
( my other response if people ask me this is to ask "was it filled or was it drunk from?" this always ruins their fun, but hey, I'm an awkward sod ) Automatically Appended Next Post: Always agree to do lots of tasks, that way you will appear to be very busy, when someone ask's you about said job, tell them you remember discussing the topic but not agreeing to do anything, offer a glimmer of hope that if left alone you may do the task ... ... and repeat.
Kudos if anyone knows where I got this from.

You need to accept the fact that there are some things in this world that are unacceptable. Only then will you have the courage to keep your footing in the maelstrom that is life.
-Me, paraphrasing Corey Taylor's concept of the Slipknot (The metaphor for the band, not the band itself). That Corey Taylor dude is one deep thinker...

I am going to choose to ignore this. Not because the debate is without merit, but I have made a new resolution for Halloween: Actually paying attention to my Corey Taylor quote. More hurr , less flaming rants
So dig what you dig, Red, but tread carefully. Let other people dig what they dig, too. People really hate it when you piss all over their ideals... Not saying that is what you were doing... Just saying... I speak from experience...

I would hazard a guess that Red9 fancies himself a realist. Sure, why not, but the odds of him being a holistic realist are very low.
I can build many boxes too, but my box is better than your box, but it actually isn't better than your box, but it has more boxes in it than your box actually. I like to keep it simple, like the fact that when you run into walls, you hit them, and when you kick boulders they hurt your foot. Anything beyond that is superfluous, and no less than icing on the cake.
Here are some words of true wisdom indeed.
