Well, they have rules for cover saves, so they could have made a 5+ cover save that cannot be ignored by items that ignore cover saves, or even just gone "5+ invulnerable, resolved the same way as a cover save would".

Except they are not intended to be cover saves, but also work in cc. Your wording would not fulfill that purpose.

Well how about actually writing the rule properly and making it a unique save with the rules contained in the codex rather than an invulnerable save that does not work (and for some reason is ignored by Psycannons)?

Right, which is why I was stating the rule should be written like this:

Ward of the Primarch: [insert fluffy comment here]. Bjorn ignores a glancing or penetrating hit on a 5+.

Or for more 'raw clearliness':

For each glancing or penetrating hit, roll a die. On a 5+ that hit is ignored.

Gwar, I think your being to hard on plasma pistols.
IMO they should never be considered a drawback - you still get the +1CC attack for 2CCWs, and can use it as a last ditch attempt to pop a light tank, or get that rear armour shot.
Not having a bolt pistol isn't going to make the difference between victory and defeat, and no one will force you to fire it if you dont want to take the risk.
