WAAAAAGH!.

What kind of HQ are you using?

A big mek can have a kustom force field, which works well with goffy tactics.
Or a warboss can smack those umies' well ard'!
or you could field a grazzkul thaka in a mob of ard' boyz.
or a weird boy who can zzap em' up good an proper!, although they don't work as well with infantry based armies.

Downunder

Weirdboyz work best upgraded to Warpheads and in pairs.

Big Meks have the KFF which is pretty self-explantory when you read it. They serve best as a supporting HQ and not leading the charge.

Warbosses are the Bread & Butter HQ. Goes with almost every build, excluding the Warphead twins obviously.

Ghaz is not a model, so much as a statement, a challenge; "You intend to table as much of your oppponent as you can, screw the rules you have a 2++"

Also littlenibbler Orks aren't about armour saves.
Orks are about having too many models on the table, and wasting the other guy's time with your movement phase.
Orks are about having the toughest units on the table.
Orks are about not caring about how many bodies are left in a long winding trail until the squad is down to less than a third its starting strength.
Orks are about rolling more dice then you can count without the aid of a calculator or a pen and paper.
Orks are about having totally fething insane characters tearing gak down like Doc Grotsnik, Ghazghkull or Snikrot.
Orks are about being too fething awesome to die...
Lets settle this in the arena http://pantsformer.mybrute.com

I find that IMO the KFF is good for both, They can do either or both at the same time !

So you can use it for infantry!

In the Webway.

IMO a warboss is a must, make sure it has a PK. With a slugga this means 6 PK attacks, ouch. Take on one a warbike if you are going to feild speed freeks. Warbosses are bril

I have a Mek at the moment, which is good as its KFF provides good cover. Not all my orks have a transport yet (i have 5, soon to be 6, armies to split between) so its good for the foot slogging ones, a Goff must have. Its even good to prolong the life of an otherwise very vunerable trukk.

I'm quite torn whether to get a weirdboy (warphead of course) to replace my mek. They're decent in combat-4 I4 S5 attacks on the charge- and can really help beef up a squad of boyz. He can teleport the boyz, make a Waaaghhh! and give each boy in his squad an extra attacks. Not to mention the devastating shooting attacks on the chart. If i did get one id probably put him, along with 19 other boyz, in an open-top BW. He can then fire out of the wagon and perhaps I'll get lucky and get that +1 attack on the turn i assault.

Of course there are lots of great special characters that are good and also fun to play. My favourite is Old Zogwort purely because of his ability to turn someone into a squig. There's wazdakka as well, a great addition to a speed freeks army (i must get round to converting a model for him) and the Mad Dok's good too, not forgetting the prophet of the Waaggh! himself, ol' Ghaz.

Good Ork Army themes can include but are not limited to:

Kan Wall - A line of Kans in front with a green tide behind
Mek Orks - Put everything into BW and/or trukks and charge!
Green tide - As many boys as you can get charge on foot, Note grot screens or KFF are good ideas
Speekfreaks - Bikes, deffkoptas, trukks, BWs and anything else that moves fast! (stomrboys fit in well here)

As above posters have said, stick with a theme and you will do well.

Welcome to the Orks!

Yea you cant say it enough, find a scheme, and stick to it. You will do well, but if you try to mix them, youll find your chances are cut pretty badly at winning.

A SAG is good with a load of boyz near the target cus' if the mek is teleported He gets a good scrap. I wish I could see the opponents face when a PK (can you give a mek PK when he has a SAG?, if a SM HQ has two power fists he can use a pistol.) armed big mek gets teleported through the warp with a mob of boyz come from the other side charges into them!
