I honestly don't care anymore. I agree with Mannahnin in terms of where AT-43 falls in genres. It's not quite a boardgame, but it's not the same kind of game as 40K, WHFB, Flames of War, Warmachine/Hordes, Infinity or even the new Malifeux.

I think it's because of this that I don't take AT-43 seriously anymore, any more than I take Axis and Allies or Risk seriously. I had a game last week and I lost, and didn't give a damn. I didn't put a bunch of effort into making my minis such that I could play. The rules syntax is often so borked that you have no choice but to laugh unless you want to lose your mind - but this means you can just relax and have fun. It's a break from the hyper-competitiveness that is unfortunately prevalent in 40K.

No, I can't say I am much interested in adapting any more rules, Orlanth, short of trying to polish up that mission system I and a friend made over time and which I am still experimenting with. I'd like to make some tokens for Laser Designators, use of Medics, and Drop Points, as well as some Neutral Access Zones that you can lay down on table edges just because I think it would be neat, but the rules are the rules, flawed or not.

If I want to play a serious game I've got Flames of War. If I want to push very nicely-painted models on the table and play a little less-well-designed ruleset I'll play 40K. If I just want to have some carefree fun, I'll play AT-43. For me, it's mostly about collecting the minis and enjoying reading the fluff, now.

I find it sad and pathetic that people argue over what's a hobby and what isn't, especially when they could be using their time wisely and doing their hobby instead of arguing about it.

Well, you brought up model railroading, and as a model railroader (it got me into modeling in general, and I somehow made the jump from model railroading to 40k, and now possibly to at-43), I simply must comment on this. If one can claim that 40k is three hobbies combined (wargaming, modeling, painting), than model railroading is much more (for a basic stand alone layout (provided you do this all yourself): light carpentry, electrical wiring, modeling, painting, scenery construction). Many people are likely not to like every aspect of the hobby, but we can find ways to minimize the aspects that we enjoy less so that we can focus on the aspects we enjoy more. Personally, thats what makes it a hobby for me.

Wargaming should be no different. People should focus on what they find enjoyable, and downplay what they don't. Its a hobby, lighten up and have fun people.

On a completely unrelated note, my screen-name is derived from railroading: Southern Pacific [US railroad] Black Widow [historical paint scheme] F7 [a type of diesel engine released in the mid 1940's IIRC] example
