Yes they sat on an objective and shot with their auto cannon but they really didn't do much other then provide a cheap 115 pt scoring unit in a Chimera. What was good was the 4 flamer platoon command squad if you actually got close enough to burn something but more often then not your chimera would get blown up and your platoon command would die.
10 regulars on foot just sounds bad. If they get assaulted your just dead and your taking a leadership test after only a few get shot.
which is why I always pack a regimental standard for my
CCS, who sits in their chimera and babysits the firebase...that reroll works wonders on a
ld of 8.....
I play a hybrid list..for my opponents to be in position to assault (unless they are snikrot or units like that) they must have fought through my chimera borne component packing the meltas and flamers. Even then, I have Rough riders to assault the (presumably weakened) unit. This is also the reason why in many cases the firebase is usually untouched by endgame, as most opponents focus on the battle in the middle or on their side (as I like to field marbo and outflankers like sentinels, a skimmer etc.).
I do combine squads, but not all of them. I run 4 squads from 2 platoons, and I usually combine 2 from 1 platoon, and usually leave 2 10 man squads as flank screens and firebase line extenders, although depending on the opponents and scenario, I may also combine the squads in the 2nd platoon. In my last tourney where 1 mission was kill the enemy
HQ, I ran them all in 10 man squads, as "speed bumps" versus my ork opponent.
This option to combine squads is also 1 of the fantastic new rules in our new codex that makes the
IG a real pleasure to play, as there are so many options to go about playing the same list in every game (do I combine squads? do I keep this unit in reserve? do I deploy mounted or not? do I scout or outflank, etc. etc.) in response to the scenarios and situation.
