IG: do you ever run 10-man squads of regulars?
Yes, all the time.
Sometimes, depending on situation at deployment.
Rarely.
Never. Blobz Rule!
I don't run regulars. Vets FTW!
[optional] I ran 10 man squads and regretted it.

I am completely in line with Shep.

I, too, started with just mech vets, both skimmer and chimera mounted, but quickly switched out the chimera mounted for regular line squads w/ AC and GL. They objective sit and live a lot longer, and if needed can blob up to save on KPs or if I need to tarpit something.

My tanks do the killing, the vets go for the far/dangerous objectives (which they rarely get) and the line platoon hold the closer objectives. Its a lot easier to use Incoming or atleast go to ground when you're only losing a single BS 3 AC then losing a vet unit for a whole turn.

off topic: matter of fact, my vets get killed so easy that I am strongly considering making the switch to a unit of SoB instead...

Kirika wrote:I ran 10 regulars in Chimeras as Shep and Avariel described but I found them rather lack luster. Yes they sat on an objective and shot with their auto cannon but they really didn't do much other then provide a cheap 115 pt scoring unit in a Chimera. What was good was the 4 flamer platoon command squad if you actually got close enough to burn something but more often then not your chimera would get blown up and your platoon command would die.

10 regulars on foot just sounds bad. If they get assaulted your just dead and your taking a leadership test after only a few get shot.

which is why I always pack a regimental standard for my CCS, who sits in their chimera and babysits the firebase...that reroll works wonders on a ld of 8.....

I play a hybrid list..for my opponents to be in position to assault (unless they are snikrot or units like that) they must have fought through my chimera borne component packing the meltas and flamers. Even then, I have Rough riders to assault the (presumably weakened) unit. This is also the reason why in many cases the firebase is usually untouched by endgame, as most opponents focus on the battle in the middle or on their side (as I like to field marbo and outflankers like sentinels, a skimmer etc.).

I do combine squads, but not all of them. I run 4 squads from 2 platoons, and I usually combine 2 from 1 platoon, and usually leave 2 10 man squads as flank screens and firebase line extenders, although depending on the opponents and scenario, I may also combine the squads in the 2nd platoon. In my last tourney where 1 mission was kill the enemy HQ, I ran them all in 10 man squads, as "speed bumps" versus my ork opponent.

This option to combine squads is also 1 of the fantastic new rules in our new codex that makes the IG a real pleasure to play, as there are so many options to go about playing the same list in every game (do I combine squads? do I keep this unit in reserve? do I deploy mounted or not? do I scout or outflank, etc. etc.) in response to the scenarios and situation.

Being a newbie to IG, I wanted to comment/discuss this point a little more.

If you're going to do the whole blob + Commisar thing, whats the right size to blob with?
20 seems like its barely worth it and realistically alot of units who can kill 10 GEQ can also kill 20 if they're lucky.
30 seems to be a nicely balanced amount and probably is the best bet.
40-50 seems like an "eggs in all baskets" kind of decision, its super efficient but I wonder if it just screams "tarpit me!"

Also I've heard the term "bubblewrap" a few times. I'm not sure on what that means but I'm assuming it refers to surrounding armor with IG bodies.

Ya that's the idea of bubblewrap, 762.

For the blob analysis, I think you're right that 30 is a balanced number for the blob. However all other numbers are also viable. Blobs don't always have to be intended for CC. The situation at deployment will have alot to do with it for some commanders, as well as the points levels and battle doctrine of your army.

Fun and Fluff for the Win!

Whatever else you can say about the bubble-wrap tactic, it's nice to see that tanks and infantry need mutual support.
