I'm not sure how good that Yellow you mentioned is, but just to let the OP know- don't try Imperial Fists with GW paints if you want an easy to paint chapter. Yellow is one of the most difficult colours to paint well (white and red can be awkward too).

I always found Ultramarines to be one of the easiest, as Ultramarines Blue is very forgiving. Dark Angels are fairly easy too, until you get to the Veterans/Special Characters with robes.

The custom chapter looks decent, it's a shame about the camera though.

The P3 range is a lot better than the GW paints

Honestly, Crimson fists with the GW foundation paints. And use the P3 Khador red for the hands and eyes.

These suggestions are great, but do you have any pictures to show with them? Visuals always help, especially when we're talking about colors lol.

yea, sorry again about the picture quality, its all I can do right now.

Thanks all!

** Also, Im not opposed to doing Ultramarines, does anyone know of a step by step to painting them, or can show some they did or somethin? I obviously want them to look good, but am also interested in getting them painted finally lol.

Thanks again!

There was a pretty good one in the how to paint citadel minatures book although the blue is a little bright for my tastes.

I was almost sold on the Ultramarines, but Ive noticed a lot of Imperial Fists armies that are no longer the shade of my local School Buses, lol.

I was wondering if anyone's tried something other than what's been mentioned, something like Iyanden Darksun with some other yellow drybrushed over it, then washed with Devlan or maybe Badab?

Any thoughts?

Definitely any battleworn metal color marine is the easiest. Paint boltgun metal, wash badaab black, drybrush. Or paint mithril silver, wash devlan mud, let dry, wash badaab black, drybrush mithril silver... Paint details. Done. Manages to look decent anyway. That's why Iron Warriors were so popular.

Anything else is more or less more work...

Cheers

I would listen to jutami - I checked out his gallery images, and that boy can paint like nobody's business! I've painted my share of Blood Angels back in the day, and the trouble for me was to avoid them looking too bright. Of course that was back in the day when Citadel insisted you undercoat everything white.

On the armour of my Kult of Speed Orks I spray black, then put on some good coats of mechrite, then real thin line highlights of blood red and finally a wash of Baal red. It makes for a striking, but not too saturated red that I think would look just right for Blood Angels as well. Basic, relatively quick to paint but good enough for me!

...Then again white undercoat could still be best for BA, as long as you avoid the orange syndrome (they don't make Blood Angels Red anymore, so you'd be in the clear).

Paintin' the green tide... one Ork at a time.

So what you're saying is.....DOOM EAGLES! lol.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Can anyone tell me/show me/link me to any other Metallic based Astartes Chapters?

That does sound pretty awesome actually. Use a metallic and maybe one solid color to offset it, details and done!

Ideas?

A great metallic chapter is silver skulls. Bolt gun I think wash of badab black then highlight with chainmail. Beware I'm just taking a shot in the dark of what the scheme is.

Brother Humble's Legion of Humility.

They feel that pride is a sin in the eyes of the Space Emporer and refuse to paint their armor. They go into battle in only bare metal or rap plasti-steel armor.

Sometimes they even coat their bare heads to match the armor.

You don't hear much about them but they're actually one of the most popular chapters.

Here's a few pics of my old Iron Warriors. Mithril silver + 3-4 washes and rehighlights. Didn't really take all that much time to paint the basic armor, fiddling around with warning stripes and yellow on the bases took some extra time offcourse, but that's optional. And offcourse, I did this before the new washes, which could probably shave off 30% time if I redid a Iron Warrior army these days...

Ok, Ive decided!!!!!

Here they are!
(Apologies again for the Camera Phone pics, it's all Ive got right now)

Ive decided to go Ultramarines! And I put a little twist on it, as they were my very first army about 11 or 12 years ago when I first started and they used Yellow on the shoulder pad trim and Red on the Bolters. Ive decided to do these as a little throw back to the end of 2nd Ed./ beginning of 3rd. colors of 2nd Company (that's when I got into 40k)

Strangely Im really excited about it, lol. I wish I had started sooner in the evening, but I had 3 rejects that didnt really pan out. Ill post those as well.

I got extra excited when I got the big "U" hand painted on there!

Reject Son of Medusa. Impatience can really kill a figure. Really gotta wait for those layers to dry.

This was weird, but not totally bad looking. Its Tin Bits, Dwarven Bronze, Chainmail on parts, Liche and Warlock purples for the details. eh, didnt work out lol

Stay away from: Light colours (yellow, pink, reds)
Fun to work with: Mid tone colours (they cover easy over undercoat). Mid tone blues and greens. Mid greys.. you get the point. Can be easy\fun to highlight.
Dark colours can work. Can be boring. Can be hard to highlight properly.

If you just want a simple, neat, quick army done then you have more choices. If you want to highlight, blend and hand brush icons\symbols then colour choice is harder.

Currently collecting and painting Eldar from W40k.
