IMO the uber-reliance on CGI/BOOM,BANG,POW!!! effects wreck a movie, don't get me wrong good effects are a nice addition to any film, but with out solid character development and an interesting story a film will not hold my attention.
Lets take The Terminator franchise for example,Terminator 1 and 2 were very story driven, although T2 did have some very nice effects with the "liquid metal" T1000,in contrast Terminator salvation was much more effects driven and in such the story was less interesting and effective.
One can also note a film such as JAWS,in wich the primary "effect" (the Shark) didn't even work for half the filming of the movie, yet the movie itself is great specificly due to story and character development.
For me,less "eye candy"for "eye candys" sake and more in depth story/development always makes a better film.
