I think he's totally off base about Oblivion. Blind even. How can it be compared disfavorably to Assassin's Creed (ugh--sorry, vomited a bit in my mouth at the thought of how overrated--baaaaaarf! ugh, there it is) of all things? His limp jokes fizzle completely in the light of his utter lack of taste. Or maybe I just don't agree . . .

The first thing anyone should know about Yahtzee is that I think he stopped being a serious critic long ago. These days he mostly just comes up with the most insane thing the say as humanly (or inhumanly possible). He's offbase about every game he reviews, but his nit picking is the fun

Granted I can see how many won't find him funny.

Nah, imo, he's sharp and has a feeling for gak we gamers have to struggle with in almost every release. And honestly, most games are pretty horrible...

I agree most games are pretty horrible these days. I've been playing since NES, and frankly when you've been around that long everything starts feeling really really bland. That said Yahtzee rarely if ever mentions the up sides to the games he reviews, so it gives off the feeling that the games aren't just horrible they'll kill you. He usually just comes in the last 30 seconds and says "but its not a bad game" if its actually okay.

EDIT: Of course he does occasionally hit the nail on the head ala his Fable reviews (most overrated game series ever).

So yeah Darksiders is roughly damn close to GoW playstyle. Is that a bad thing? You are familiar with the controls, combat is fluid and not very frustrating. I don't see why some people make a huge deal out of it. Industries take ideas from each other all the time. There is little to no originality anymore.

I like Yahtzee, but only when he reviews games that I don't like. He's not a serious reviewer by any means.

Looks like we have a "world revolves around me and my opinions" poster here. Watch out, he knows all.

Its pretty obvious that a lot of people dont understand the point of his "reviews" and get butthurt when their favourite games are insulted. Zero Punctuation's whole selling point is taking (for the most part) small flaws and blowing it completely out of proportion. You're supposed to think "Yea, that is silly, isnt it?", not "This guy is a terrible reviewer if he thinks that THAT is actually important".

Essentially it's for people with a sense of humour and can take things with a grain of salt.

And this is exactly what I was talking about. You have completely missed the point and have ignorantly blurted out your opinion, congratulations.

The problem is that he used to be serious in a funny way, but he slowly devolved into just trying to find things to make fun of.

I agreed with everything he says about Darksiders. Particularly about some suits deciding to make a game that cannibalizes a bunch of other popular games in an attempt to make an unholy hybrid mega-seller. I probably won't make a habit of watching his reviews, and I'm not compelled to go watch any more right now, but that was a very enjoyable five minutes. I also thought he was very funny.

That might be because I like irritating American comedy though right? Maybe I'll go watch Keeping Up Appearances and feel superior for a while.

Kind of QFT. Pretty neck-in-neck with Assassin's Creed (oh, my stomach . . . ugh) or, in PC terms, the incredibly lame Galaxy At War. This could become a new thread, though.

I like Yahtzee, but despite his protestations that 20 years of gaming make him otherwise, I think he's a massive noob... a lot of problems he complains about can be attributed to lack of skill.

He also NEVER reviews RTS' because he sucks at them

But he did some pretty epic trolling about Brawl...

Several people here seem to think that Yahtzee rips on games because he doesn't like them. I think that reviewers and critics of all varieties (food, movies, etc) have learned that positive reviews aren't what people want. For some reason, people only like negative reviews. And yes, I am sure you want to hear good things about your favorite game (whoever you are) but the fact is that scathing commentary is more funny than worshipful praise. But even when Yahtzee likes a game, he has to spend more time on its downsides than its good points. Look at his Arkham Asylum review.

I started watching Yahtzee when I was accused of watching him. I had never heard of the guy, but since I had been in several arguments with friends in a debate over consoles, and was saying some of the exact things that he was in his first console rundown, my buddy thought I had been watching it. I was amazed to find that there was a game reviewer who liked the same things I did when it came to video games, and hated the same things I did.

I watch his reviews because if he is reviewing a game, chances are that if he doesn't like it, I will not like it. I also like that he is more than willing to point out a game's positive traits, and doesn't assign arbitrary numbers to them. I don't agree with him on every single point (I like rts's a bit more than he does) but for the most part, he is looking for the same things in a game that I am.

But, definitely not for everyone.
