The KJV is undoubtedly beautiful. But if I wanted to know about English kings, I wouldn't study Shakespeare.

I made a mistake! I meant ESV. CEV is about on par with the NIV for ease of reading over accuracy. Damned acronyms.

Damn me for listening to your acronyms! I just read asterisks and alternate translations and didn't bother to check (I didn't this time either...I'm too lazy )

Just go to your local motel and look in the nightstand, for some reason there's always a bible in there.
I think that this entire thing is rather confusing as different religions will use different versions of the bible at times. Get a cheap one to start out with(think Battle for Macragge) and then decide if you want a fancier bible or a different version of the bible(Apocalypse or Planetstrike).

I have the opposite problem than the OP I believe. I was brought up in a specifically protestant christian school, in spite of their claims otherwise, they were not only mostly protestant but southern baptist/pentecostal. So I was only exposed to the KJV and that was the ONLY real WORD OF GOD. My current version I'm reading is the New American Version, for Catholics. I would also recommend finding an Orthodox version, as they apparently consider a couple more books than the Catholics to be canonical.
Honestly, unless reading the bible is all you want to do, look into other books of western spirituality. Contrary to what the Pentecostals and Baptists would have you believe, there are christian books other than the bible out there. I have to suggest Beowulf and The Divine Comedy. I probably would have been devoutly religious had I read Dante prior to being exposed to certain versions of Christianity.
Their loss.

Just keep in mind NIV doesn't have the apocryphya ( the apocrypha according to protestants) I haven't gotten a chance to read an orthodox bible, they have the most books, is my understanding.

We can't forget Josephus either Automatically Appended Next Post: @Iron: Contemporary English Version and English Standard Version are easy names to mix up. Kinda like every Baptist church out there. "First Baptist Church" "Baptist Church of Jesus" "Baptist Church of Christ our Lord" etc.
