I think your system works..... for pistols and rifles(maby), but plasma cannons have a seperate battery mounted on the marines back, the gun IS a cooling system, if that fails, well by, by space marine squad, hello jello.

Fluff wise, just because the model is removed, it does not mean he is dead. He could be dazed or stunned. His fingers could be missing. There are any number of reasons why he is still alive but unable to fight anymore.
I think they are just trying to balance the rules between complex and completely realistic against usable rules that keep gameplay moving.
