how many coats of wash do you all find is sufficient for metals? Or for vehicles? Or just in general? I am new to the washing aspect of things, and certainly don't want to overdo it but want it to look snazzy too.

The biggest thing someone can do to quickly upgrade the appearance of their army is to base them well. Here are some tips:
Decide on ONE basing type/scheme. If you want them to look like they are in river shoals, make the entire army in river shoals. Having multiple basing schemes looks sloppy.
Do not just glue sand and rocks to the bases, and then call it quits. Paint the sand or rocks in a dark color. Snakebite leather is good for dirt/mud. Black is good for rocks. Then DRYBRUSH. Here's how:
Take a lighter tone (Bleached bone for the snakebite dirt, or Codex grey for the rocks) and dip a largish brush into the paint. Then wipe the majority of the paint off on a paper towel. When you are getting very little paint to come off onto the towel, start drybrushing. apply the brush to the basing material in a manner where you sort of use the side instead of the tip of the bristles. You will notice the lighter color scrapes off on to the basing material.
It makes a huge difference, and in tournaments will probably raise your painting score by at least 20%.

things i see that could use a fix, Mould lines definitely need cleaning, Blending, easiest way is to base coat then double drybrush over in healthy ammount, a lighter tone of your base colour, then mix a tiny bit of highlight colour to that and repeat once and lightly, then take your recess shadow colour, so reds, mix 50/50 baal red and devlan mud, apply healthily although slighly watered to reduce severe pooling, let it dry the repeat
Once you have done that, take your base colour, mix with your wash, and use as a glaze but not in recesses, then finally paint a slightly lighter colour of your base colour on edges..
sounds complex but very easy to do
