Thats one of the benefits of the Defiler that gets overlooked. Anything short of a destroyed result won't do alot to stop it from being a threat. So even if you roll 2-3 penetrating hits on it, there is a decent chance you'll just knock off some weapons and stun it but not actually destroy it.
Its one of the reasons I really like it. Its difficult to shut it down with a single shot like you can with a Predator and its not reliant on a single weapon system like a Vindicator. For Chaos vehicles only a
DP Land Raider is better at absorbing incoming fire.
You're pretty much right on both counts, the unit was deployed out of cover and the pie plate nicely covered the whole unit, centred on one of the standard marines. The Trygon was down to 3 wounds after some rapid-fire plasma, only managed to hit twice and penetrated once, imobilising the Defiler which then ripped the Trygon in two (ironically my Defiler is 50% Carnifex bitz - i.e. the Defilerfex).
I'd say that the Defiler is pretty versatile, if you're against
MEQ's you only have to get one battlecannon on target to claw back 80-100% of the points which
imo are essentially ~=
KP's, alternatively it can charge in and do some nasty stuff to PFist units, up to 5 S10 attackes at I3 on the charge can really mess up even a small Nobz/Termi squads day. I'd probably say that it's weaker against Horde armies than
MEQ or similar as despite the battlecannon taking out large chunks of troops it can effectively be tar pitted then crushed by an
MC etc.
