I thought it was the actual hatch of the turret all along

I'm not sure if this is a real question or not. But the answer. Old rules. Now why the new model still has them, couldn't say.................

Because in previous versions of the rules the embarked models fired the chimera's lasguns rather than their own weapons. Then they allowed embarked models to fire their own weapons, and treated the lasguns as being a sort of gunport with the lasguns sticking through. Then someone finally caught up with the fact that the shooting rules for the last couple of editions made having three gunports on either side of the vehicle completely pointless since you would only ever be able to use half of them at a time due to everyone having to fire at the same target, and so they changed it to the embarked models simply firing out the top hatch.

Presumably nobody told the model guys, or they could have just removed the lasguns when they set up the new, improved, fewer pieces Chimera sprues.

I've been pulling mine out of the model and covering over the holes with old tank treads.

I've been thinking that for a vet squad replacing the lasguns with special weapons could be cool. Maybe not all of them, but enough to make it look like the vets have customized their chimera a bit.

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

I've seen quite a few over the years where people have just left the lasguns off, leaving the ports in place. Looks a lot better than all those lasguns waving about.

That's what I do with my Chims. I also leave those bulky side sponson-things off. Makes my Chims sleeker and less like something built to wallow through mud.

A Cupola is not a Hatch

Bah, Gwar you are slipping, this comment is not based on any rules and is simply your opinion. A Cupola is the assembly that mounted weapons and vision ports are affixed to. There is a top hatch on top of the Cupola. What you are saying is similar to saying the rear hatch on the Chimera isn’t a top hatch because it’s the tank , see how that doesn’t make sense. Just as on the Rhino you can use the any of the “top” hatches to draw LOS and measure it from. The rules don’t define it as the "rear top" hatch just the "top" hatch. Since all of the hatches are technically the “top” hatch because they are hatches on top of the tank you are able to draw LOS a fire from them RAW. However, I would have to agree that RAI are the “rear top” hatch to be used but I don’t use RAI just RAW like I thought you so frequently say you do.
