I've met few people I refuse to play in 40K.
Only one comes to mind, in fact.
Had to play him in a tournament. Outside of a tourney, I'll never play against him again. TFG Extreme.
There's a kid at the locak FLGS. Good kid, but wired tighter than a spring. I'm certain he's ADD, and I admit I just don't have the patience. I'd probably TRY a 500 or 750 point game if nothing else was going on, but I make no promises.
Two other guys I'd prefer not to play against at the local FLGS:
First guy is 13 or 14, "fast hands" his dice, "rolls" when you aren't looking, questionable movement. I'd play him, as he has a decent personality (aside from his cheating/fudging), but I'd watch him like a hawk.

Second guy is mid to late 20's. Thinks he's hot sh**. Wins about 50% of his games, but is a blowhard who talks a better game than he plays. MIGHT be able to stand ONE game against him... a month... but I couldn't handle much more.

As for kids... I don't mind the kids in general. Many of them know the rules inside out. I mean, come on, they're 13 or 14. It's not like they have a job that takes up their spare time. they've got more than enough time to memorize the books!

There is one Doc'tor that will refuse to play even in a tournament.Over all he is nothing but an ass to me the people in my old group. I also stay away from his tournaments which limits me to just about 3 cities that have have regular tournaments.

On Dakka he was Eldanar. In our area, he was Lee. R.I.P., Lee Guthrie.

1- i don't play kids. i just don't want to deal with it, they don't know the rules, and when i do have spare time for a game, i just don't want to teach instead of game

2- i mainly play tournments, i won't really play people who are adults/ late teen's but learning or, openly do not know the rules. if its a really slow night, maybe i bend on this, but only if i'm asked and the person seem's like a good guy.

If you take the time to nurture some of these people into playing by the rules and knowing the rules then you get better attendance at tournaments and better quality of players at your local store.

Admittedly you need a certain personality type to teach people how to play. If you don't have that personality then you should NOT be teaching. Having raised a few kids and having been a teacher for years it's something I can at least tolerate and keep good cheer if not actually enjoy it.

I've taught well over 100 people to play the game. Problem is, I physically do not have the time any longer. That's the direction my post comes from. I game at tournments not to win, but to have 3-5 games in a day maybe every other month. I'm not the guy at the gaming shop 2-3x per week. I'm the guy people know, like, but know i'm really really busy with work, family, and other commitments. As far as the personality comment, if you read my post its clear time is an issue, and when I have the time, i'd rather just have a game and relax, not be teaching the game. And for reference, I also work as a teacher, if your talking in generic please don't quote a post, if your quoting referencing the poster direct it at them.

I won't game with anyone I don't find it fun to game with, have been known to not even finish games with TFG's or rules/fluff nazi's. I guess it's confidence with getting older but if I'm not having fun I will not punish myself by continuing with the game. I will always be polite about saying so, i won't rant or rage but I also will not pander to people as it only makes them worse and I have always been a straight talker so no "left my army at home" excuses either lol.

I've yet to literally refuse to play someone, though I've used excuses for not playing certain people if I can ("Nah, don't wanna start up another game. I'll be leaving soon." or equally plausible reason). Every now and then I get stuck without a graceful exit so I go ahead and play with the idea to go balls to the wall and get the game over with.

Not to nitpick but you did say in your post "I just don't want to deal with it, they don't know the rules, etc." and you "wouldn't play someone that openly did not know the rules." That sounded a bit different than "my time will not allow me to teach".

njpc wrote:As far as the personality comment, if you read my post its clear time is an issue...

Clear to you, sir. It was not clear to me. You never quoted time constraints and in fact said "I just don't want to deal with it". If time is the issue I certainly understand that.

I don't usually refuse games with younger kids, but i play small patrol sized games with them to help them with tactics and rules. I guess these games wouldn't be considered games, more or less teaching games. Once they're older i'll play a serious game with them. There are a few creeps that lurk around the store from time to time that i refuse though.

There are three local individuals that I will not play against, unless forced to in a tournament situation and even then I'll try to get the TO to get me a new opponent.

The main thing they do is gripe about either 1) 5th Edition rules or 2) "power" level of units. I don't mind having a calm discussion about the merits of one unit over another, but I know that from these people I'm going to get a long drawn out gripe fest.

I don't mind playing kids. We have an older base of gamers at our shop and I would welcome some new, younger blood (for Khorne of course).

I admit to 1 person i wouldn't ever play against luckily he's never wanted a game.
It started a local tourny. He was the TO and he made all my battle DoW deployments all againts HtH combat armies.
I had eldar. Because it was DoW my Dark Reapers started offboard. My oppenets i'm fine with they knew i was set up to lose.
it was small scale matches (500pts). and 2 Khrone Beserkers squads starting halfway into the table owned my guardians and rangers.
Luckily though i wasnt last in this tourny. But i will never play against him as the stream of casual insults really get to me.

Kids I'm fine with. I think most of you will consider me a kid. (i'm 16 at the moment). But I have an encyclopedic knowe=ledge of the rules and me codexes. (to the extent i don't need a codex most of the time to write an army list!)
