the only comments I ever get in my gallery are for pics I've uploaded for articles from other
users.

Anything imported from articles or forum posts is flagged as 'uploaded by' but not 'owned by' the user. I think I need to spend some time making this more distinct so that users can clearly see it is uploaded instead of owned by that user, and make it clear that it was created by someone else.

@Kanluwen: the minis of mine that I've seen in others' galleries are in my gallery as well...
I'm not looking to get commissions, just to be credited for my work...
it's more about other people who I know don't frequent Dakka, and thus don't know that they are having their work voted on in someone else's gallery without being credited...

Gotcha. I didn't know if you were meaning people were swiping your actual images or that they were uploading photos of models you've painted. If you're seeing photos of your models being posted on other sites and people claiming it's theirs--contact the site administrators and the user who uploaded it.

I don't like the idea because, if someone did a cruddy job and your rating of it reflects that, you'll have to put up with their whiny grudge, if they're that sort of person.

I have made my decision. Although the poll indicates heavily towards 'Yes', when I discount anonymous users and add weight to people who actually use the gallery, it is almost a perfect 50/50 split.

Here is what I will do...
Image scores will be hidden until an image gets 5 votes. Anything less than that will just say 'Needs more votes'. Originally we had this then took it out for fear of people complaining about nobody ever voting, but I would much sooner see people complain about that than have people think that spam voting is a problem.

Spam voters will be detected and removed. Teek, dont worry, the algorithm easily accounts for you and similar usage patterns (I consider that pattern valid anyway). I estimate that 1% of the people removed will be false positives, about 10% will repent and ask to have voting re-enabled, and the remaining 89% or so will be good riddance.

I will show who has voted on an image, but not the scores they have given. This will enable reciprocal voting and requests for feedback, but will not enable as much moaning or bullying from image owners thanks to plausible deniability. I will also show the flags and country names (but not IP addresses) of any anonymous votes that a user might have got, so you will be able to see how far around the world your image has been rated.

And finally to ease the concerns of top artists like jah joshua, I'll replace 'uploaded by blah' with 'This image created by UNKNOWN, uploaded by blah' with a link to claim ownership where needed.

As mentioned before, the ability to disable voting for all your images, individual galleries or individual images will also be put in place so it will finally be possible to opt out if you are so inclined or are uploading things like battle report diagrams that you dont want to clutter the gallery voting process.

Very thoughtful solutions. Great job and thanks for trying to make the Gallery even better than it is already.
