Personally I like planning on attending a tournamet in the future then setting goals for said tournament.
In the last 6 months, I've planned on attending two tournaments and finishing two armies (Warriors of Chaos and Ogres). The first tournament I was able to finish the army on time and I will be ready for the second tournament on time.
The key for me is to paint at least an hour every night. I like to paint at least 2-3 a day, but that is not always possible.
If you are getting burned out just stop and take a breather. Maybe even working on something new can help a lot.

I had this crazy idea at some one point to strip and clean my entire 14000 point DA army. I worked for weeks scrubbing and cleaning my army, soaking it in super clean, pulling pieces apart, and getting the paint off as much as possible. I then got on a assembling kick that saw the entire army re-made into not only better equipment options (or magnetized in some cases) but put the proper 50MM bases on my metal termies.
That was about a year ago. I now have 7K worth of stuff thats painted to the best of my ability. The rest is in the case and playable, just not painted. One of these days Ill finish the army, but just looking at the paint box makes me sick.
Plus there are to many good games out right now to paint.

I have had a similar problem.
I haven't painted for a month. Sometimes I get scared that I have fallen out of the hobby, then I remind myself that if I had, I wouldn't be asking myself if I have. High school + the production I am in+ my PS3 + my admin duties on servers + homework +projects + working out to pass the Air Force exam= 2 minutes to paint. But, my WH, SM, and VC codex readings keep me in. My freind goes home and paints like 3-4 orks amazing every night. He doesn't have a computer, so thats all his parents let him do. He dose very well, and goes up to our local GW alot. Me, I read the fluff, plan out my armie, and write fluff for my Armies. We all have our little things we like to in the hobby.
One thing that I think will greatly affect how often you go to the hobby is if the people around you support it. My parents HATE the hobby, they say its a waste of my time and that every single penny I make should go towards my gaming laptop. They say that its just plastic, and that there are no skills involved in the hobby at all. My freind who plays orks wont play me, so its tough to keep going. Persevere, it will pay off.

I find my motivation will wax & wane form time to time. The great thing is that this is a hobby and can be done at ones own pace. Unless you have an upcoming tourny on the horizon, you'll want to paint like a fiend to be ready. If thats not the case then just do a little here and there... you'll be done before ya know it!

I started using P&M Blogs here for motivation. The idea of FINISHING a unit, then being able to take some nice photos of it and post on an ongoing blog really helps me stay focused. I don't really use the blog to ask for improvements or criticism, but encouraging comments and people subscribing to my posts helps me keep going.
Plus, it's a great feeling when you've finally got the finished army in front of you, with nice photos of it to display online.

Hello everyone
I am quite a lazy person really ,
I find that it is hard to stay motivated with painting your minatures if you are not gaining satisfaction from the models that you have painted.I was trying to work out how to get around this problem and found that if i slowly batch painted say 5 models at a time i would get much better results , leading to me being more motivated to paint them.
Hope this is helpful to anyone who is struggling with staying motivated.
Thanks ~UnDeAd~

Just go with the flow, don't feel that you have to do your hobby just because it's there. The hobby is there for your enjoyment, if you don't feel like doing anything with it don't, it only affects you at the end of the day. If you push yourself to carry on with it you could take longer to get back in to it.
I'm currently in my second "off the hobby" phase, the last one lasted about a year. I just put everything away and left it alone until I had the urge again. This time it's hit me harder and I've sold most of my stuff to fund my interest in Photography, however as I'm not a GW player anymore it's not an issue. If I get the interest back I will go and buy the forces again. Skirmish games are good for this )

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

Chiming back in: I've found that also being involved in a gaming group really helps. I am in involved in a group of 12 guys, all with similar interests away from gaming. We meet 1x a month to game, and everyone usually brings something to paint when they are not involved in a game. With at least 10 other guys giving me praise, recommendations, and criticisim on models, it keeps me motivated to paint.
Also I've begun involving my fiancee. I ask her advice. She see's things on models I miss. Also we found out she's better with colors then I am. With my skaven almost done I asked her to help me pick a color for my future High Elves. She picked green and grey. I've never painted either color much so why not! She tried helping me paint, but didn't really like it, but she's happy to let me clean model's if we are just watching tv.
Monday are good: she likes "How I Met your mother" "Rules of Engagement" and "Big Bang Theory." That's an option for about an hour of painting/ cleaning models. I say an hour because I watch "How I met your mother" and "Big Bang Theory." The canadian girl and penny are eye candy.

call your mother if you live away from home, or if you live at home wait until she has to go out for a few hours. if mother cannot do call someone you would not like to see if you were naked.
step two take off all clothes and start painting knowing you have a deadline until they arrive. paint somewhere they could see you and the fear will help you paint quicker thus keeping you motivated to finish or be seen naked.
this might give you dirty kicks though, and thus i hold no responsability if ti does and you find you can only paint under naked pressure.
