Having finally read the rulebook to its' completion, I can see that this is going to be as easy to learn/play as I've been told.
It's a pretty intuitive system, and everything is handled similarly. It's the d20 system of wargaming! LOL

I have to respectfully disagree with extinction angel, however. While I see the benefit of playing a smallish scrap, I don't see the benefit of leaving out magic. Heck, that's what some of the factions are all about. Pluse, like I said earlier, the resolution of magic is just ike the reolution of everything else.

The only "fun times" I foresee are learning all those darned abbreviations and remembering what all the different powers do.

I enjoy the game.

The models are fantastic, and the newer ones are better designed for gaming with.

I think the tricky part is deciding which trigger to use when you have multiple options.

Some, like Bishop, trigger off nearly anything.

Some of the matchups are rough though.
A couple friends played Seamus vs Lady Justice recently, and Seamus had a hell of a time.
The Lady J player was on his first game and handing it to him.
Pretty much the rock to his scissors.

Bam, said the lady!

Yup. I really enjoy Malifaux, but I picked the Goblins because I liked the look. I'm 0 of 4 so far, and that seems pretty consistent for the Goblins. They are apparently a very difficult crew to play, especially in assault style missions. I'd recommend Lady J or Rasputina for newbies myself, since they seem pretty resilient and easy to pickup.

But it's certainly a game that's worth picking up. Great play, quick rules, extremely flavorful.

Ice, I hear the same things about the goblins. Apparently, they need a lot of finesse and are not recommended for beginning players.

I hear -and from what I've looked at, I can see why- Lady J and Lilith crews are real beating sticks... for beginners, at least.

Yeah, they are hellaciously fun to play... but hard to win with. The goblin special ability names and descriptions are worth the price of admission alone! And sometimes you get lucky, but that luck just as often smacks you around as it does your opponent. Like doing 24 points of damage to Lady J, but S'omer Teeth taking 12 in return!

Yup, both of those crews are pretty straightforward; enter combat range and pummel! Rapsy can be very resilient, with lots of armor going around, making her stuff harder to kill, though matched up against Lady J she can be swamped. At least, that's been our experience!

My reason for this is along the same lines as your stated reason against it. It's not always easy for players to get used to the card mechanic. And, because magic is just like everything else, if you leave it out of your very first game (and that's all I'm talking about here) it's nothing new so they pick it up even quicker when it's added in. People aren't picking over their spells and worrying about Ap management as much. As a side effect the game is sped up significantly. I've taught several groups of people the basics of this game and this is a tried and true method. It's gone soooo much easier/faster.

It's a good point. I can definitely see the logic.

Not a direction I'd want to go personally but, if it works for you, all the better.

I can definitely see how it would speed up the game. That's for sure.
