This Land Raider Terminus Ultra conversion was done in such as way as to use only two sponsons rather than the conventional four suggested by the Terminus Ultra Datasheet. This was the first major Mechanicus themed conversion that I did, I believe back in 2008. It inspired the Mechanicus themed Shadowsword and Stormblades I did shortly thereafter and eventually the entire Space Marine Spears Of Ares Chapter of which it is now a part.

I'm floored. This is AWESOME stuff. I do see two niggling details that I think would be simple enough to change that it'd be a shame not to work on them. First, the dread's spearhead looks a bit chunky. Filing a bit of an edge for it would greatly improve the look, I think. The other point is about the bases. The whole mosaic tile thing is cool, but the angled way they're cut out looks half-assed. I'd suggest filing the tiles flush with the base for a nice, even circle. They'd look a lot cleaner and more polished.

Again, beautiful work and nicely thought out fluff and color scheme.

A question though; What are those pillars and where can I get some?
The pillars are plastic cake pillars available at craft stores, bakeries, etc.

This Spears Of Ares Dreadnought, Deimos, is armed with a multi-melta. I combined scenic urban rubble basing with the army's standard mosaic tile basing for this model.

Thanks very much.

Here's a photo of the three Ironclad Dreadnoughts of the Spears Of Ares chapter. Arms are removeable and interchangeable. These ancient warriors are named Phobos (Fear), Atreus (Fearless), and Athos (Immortal). One of these models is a conversion of an Assault On Black Reach Dreadnought while another was built with the ordinary Space Marine Dreadnought model. By stretching the extra parts that came with a single Ironclad kit and acquiring just a few extra arms, I actually have seven arms for the three Ironclads and can switch them around as appropriate for the type of game being played. A larger version of this photo is available in my Dakkadakka Gallery.

Here's the newest addition to the Spears Of Ares heavy support team, a Land Raider Redeemer. Highlights include decorative conversion to the top front door and on top of the main hull.

Just moved to Australia.

How long did it take you to form the colour scheme and paint them because they are amazing.

"Straight Fething Silver" Tanith first and only

I have a reputation, Modile, a reputation as a fair, honest man who treats his soldiers well and supports them in the face of darkness. Potentially, that reputation makes me soft. It seems I understand failure and forgive it. Some, like Kowle, believe me to be a weak commissar, not prepared to take the action my rank demands. Not prepared to enforce field discipline where I see it failing. I am an Imperial commissar. I will enflame the weak, support the wavering, guide the lost. I will be all things to all men who need me. But I will also punish without hesitation the weak, the incompetent, and the treasonous.
I am a Commissar. I am empowered to deliver justice wherever I see it lacking. I am empowered to punish cowardice. I am granted the gift of total authority to judge, in the name of the Emperor, on the field of combat.

Wow, thanks so much for the many nice comments and questions. Here are some answers to the most recent questions posted above.

Q: I really like the mosaic work on the dreadnought armour, are they going to be given drop pods?
A: I already have three Drop Pods painted for this army and I may paint more. It was my plan to at times to use the Drop Pods for Dreadnoughts when the situation is favorable to doing so.

Q: How long did it take you to form the colour scheme and paint them because they are amazing.
A: The scheme evolved from doing the Land Raider Terminus Ultra. It was the first Mechanicus themed paint scheme that I did. The main colors of burgundy (Red Gore) with alternating black and white patterns was inspired by GW's artwork of the Adeptus Mechanicus. My idea at the time was that rarer battlefield assets like the Terminus Ultra might need to be borrowed from the Adeptus Mechanicus in severe circumstances and it was a chance to try out a different paint scheme. I then applied the same scheme to an Arkurian Pattern Shadowsword and Stormblade. Reaction from the local hobby community in the GW store where I did most of the work at the time was really favorable and a lot of people suggested doing a whole army in the Mechanicus paint scheme. I always wanted to create my own Space Marine chapter, so when the new Codex Space Marines was released I decided to proceed from there. As for how long it took to do this, the latest addition of the Redeemer took about a week of hobby time because of the size and complexity of the model including painting of the interior. However, simpler models like Dreadnoughts and Tactical Squads don't really take terribly long now that I have the paint scheme down and have done it many times. The most time consuming aspects are painting the white areas, which require several thin coats over Astronomican Grey and hard edging the highlights. Finally, the custom basing ads a bit of time as well, but it's been worth it I think. I started on this army just after the last release of Codex Space Marines and have worked on it off and on since then, mixing in other projects along the way. There's a lot more to do, including assault squads, scouts, bikes, shooting Terminators and two more Land Raider variants.

Q: Can I just ask, How did you paint the red for the Sternguard? I always seem to have a problem with blending red armour!
A: The Red Gore color (burgundy in ordinary color terms) is painted over black primer in multiple thin coats, deliberately leaving more black showing through as you gradually move toward recessed areas. Working with the paint wet and pulling it thinner with less pigment into darker areas and deliberately pulling more pigment toward brighter areas provides the desired color graduation.

As for the comment, "Hmm very greek bases", that's good to hear since it was definitely what I was hoping to convey.

I think that covers all the questions here at the moment. If there are any other hobby questions please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks again for your interest!

Hello. The raiders look great! Where did you get the adeptus insignia on the top of the raiders? Could you post a link as to where I could buy them? Also did you have to cut them in half yourself?

The Adeptus badge on the Land Raiders comes from the Imperial City factory (Manufactorum) building. I cut it from the tile and then sawed it in half with a razor hobby saw. The material between the teeth of the cog was carefully removed with a modeling knife. The badges on my Mechanicus-themed Stormblade and Shadowsword in my Imperial Guard gallery are Forge World badges cut in half.

I am nearly finished a regular Land Raider and a Crusader Land Raider as well for this army. Final highlighting will be done shortly and I hope to have pictures up here soon after that. I also need to get pictures of my Attack Bikes up here too. Thanks to everyone for the latest posts of encouraging comments!
