Yeah, that one would be too small for warhammer type games where you can roll 30+ dice, at a time, sometimes. Also I would want to make it out of plexiglass(perspex?) so that there is no obstruction to viewing the dice.

If you can't keep your dice on the table you don't deserve your dice,I'm O.K. with slight exuberance every now and again but if it's such a recurring problem that you need to get a dice tower then you're just an idiot, if you can't calm down enough to roll dice without propelling them across the room then find a game where that is an asset, take up shuffleboard...

I personally don't see an extreme need for a dice tower. Call me crazy, but in all of my games there is always enough room on the table to pick up all of the dice and then roll them. It might be totally away from the combat, but that doesn't really matter. I think it would be cool to have just to say you have one, but I don't see it practical in my games.

U might as well just free roll. No need to use a tower. Its just slows down the game and most wont allow large numbers of dice to be rolled at once.

In our gaming group we just roll all the dice into an unpside down GW model lid. It contains the dice, and you dont have to worry about the tower...

Most of the time I can easily roll on the table, but there are certainly games where there are lots of models/units everywhere which you bump into, and/or enough terrain with uneven surfaces that you get a lot of cocked dice.
This happened to me a bit at Adepticon this year, with the larger games (2250 Gladiator, 2000pts Team Tourney), and sometimes with the felt table coverings (which sometimes bunched up), or uneven table surfaces. Of course it happens on a lot of regular tables as well, particularly nice scenic ones with lots of texture, sloped hills, etc.
Dice towers or rolling boxes can be really nice to mitigate these issues, though you want to be careful how high the lip on a box or tray is so both players can easily see the rolls.

I'll agree with you Kyley. Dice towers can be cool but I feel they are not necessary.
When I have a problem keeping them on the table by just dropping them (Terrain heavy board) I just use the top of a shoe box that I use to carry my hammer head & devilfish in. Not the most dignified way to carry them but they fit nicely & I use bubble wrap to pad them.

As noted, in larger games (particularly with horde armies involved) or on sculpted tables with lots of uneven surfaces, a dice box/tray or a tower can be a nice convenience, helping avoid constant cocked dice or the chance of knocking around or damaging figs.
There’s no call to rail and use words like “idiot” or say people “don’t deserve their dice”. It’s just ignorance and incivility. Please try to be a little more polite and open-minded.

I started making Dakka Dice Trays last year, pre-Adepticon. They added a little to our Theme score (which always needs help!), but more importantly, they let me vigorously roll a significant number of dice simultaneously. This year, for example, between my 'nids and DD1's orks, I was often rolling 20-30 large dice simultaneously (and in batches - 45 Loota shots, anyone?). It keeps the dice together, and makes picking out misses easier (and picking up the hits to roll to wound). It saves time. Moreover, (most of) my opponents seemed to enjoy having a smooth, contained surface to work with as well, and cheerfully used my dice tray after I invited them to do so. (Strange people that gamers are, no one rolled into it until I offered it to them.) The original motivation for making trays, though, comes from my local store. The terrain is all on 2'x2' foam boards, and is bumpy as can be. Unless you want to be rerolling cocked dice all day long, a tray is very useful. That said, I've not been motivated to go as far as a tower. It might look cool (esp. themed - a really big Ork Kan dice tower, for example, for our kan-wall orks would be sweet), but I think it would impose an intolerable delay on obtaining results.

Playing on a Realm of Battle board (with normal amounts of terrain) usually leaves little room for rolling a ton of dice. And there's these huge pits of skulls everywhere making the dice cocked. Usually we play on tables barely fitting the RoB-board so I built this out of left over parts from my imperial sector box and some plasticard. So far it's been pretty good for our games. No problem rolling ~40 dice. Usually it's in batches of 20 though. Which makes it easier to pick up dice (like hits) without tripping other dice over.
Its just another tool in the toolbox though. We usually roll single dice freely on the board.

Not a bad idea, and it would even have that extra "Ta Daaaaaa" kind of feel. However for me it would need to be made of some clear material like plexiglass so that the box lips don't interfere with seeing the dice that will inevitably collect to the sides and corners. There is also the down side of making sure you gave it a good shake, whereas a dice tower ensures the dice get suffienctly tumbled on the way down.

I like the idea of just cutting down the sides of say, a tank box, and then using that for a rolling area. I think for me the main benefit of a tower would just be to keep the dice from going everywhere, not necessarily from preventing them from getting bunched up.

Gwar! wrote:Could you not just use a Cardboard Box, shake the box, then open the lid?
Yes, but this is more fun. It also has a turn counter.
There's also no question about the randomness. The dice go down the chute, bounce off the far wall, usually bounce off the near wall, hit the steep ^ that channels them through each pipe, rattling them around that much more, which itself is at a steep incline to make sure no dice lack the energy to make it out. When I finish, that's going to be an icky pool of water effects toxic waste, which also has a certain amount of springiness to it.
It's not like loose dice on the table are a horrible, child-killing problem, but keeping them contained and not occasionally spinning off in odd directions or hitting random models is convenient as well.

Another good reason for having a dice tower just occurred to me; Prevention of actually permanently loosing your dice!!
I've had many a game when I've had to track down stray dice during or after the game. I've been lucky to have found them most of the time, but I still have a box of 36 dice that's about 4 short. Also, there's always that annoying dice that slips out of your hand and bounces on the floor across the game room.
@ Kyley In many cases it would seem logical that you should be able to keep your dice on the table, but when you picking up rolling 40+ Dice, one might just slip out. Does NOT mean the person is some hyper handicapped person who can't roll dice without flinging them across the room.
I didn't really think a tower was nessecary at first, but it might come in handy sometimes. Of course I have the same problem with having tons of dice to roll, so I might just stick with a large orky Dice cup.
Sincerely, Barnabas Boehler

Really my friend did research and made an actual dice tower, not only was it fun and convenient but really its up to you what you want to roll your dice in. If you really want your games to get over in a blink of an eye sure just roll the hell out of your dice and get the game over with. But if you want to have an element that makes the game feel more of you putting input in and watching a cool device just topple your dice around and watch them come out, It's a nice little thing that can just be on the side lines, also you have to realize they can be any size shape and any way you want it to really roll the dice. Really it's up to the player what they want to do, me I don't really need one, but hey they sure are fun to watch for some reason.
