Metal models are cheaper to produce in small quantities, it requires economics of scale to make plastic cheaper. That's why special characters and other things they expect to sell less of tend to be metal.

Exactly, metal MOULDS are cheaper to produce, but metal models are more expensive (so less models = better), while plastic MOULDS are terribly expensive, but cheaper to produce per model (so more models = better)

Just got myself the Space Hulk Termie Librarian. Very plastic, and very awesome. I much prefer it to any of the metal variants.
