After a combat is done, you tally up the lost men on each side. The side that lost most men loose the combat. Say you loose 2 men, and your opponent looses 4. He then has to take a test at -2Ld (difference in wounds). With a company banner, you add +1 to this result, so in the same situation, he would have to take the Ld test on -3 (difference in wounds +1 for banner)

If your opponent is fearless, he has to take one save for each point of difference, so a banner could then make your opponent take one more save

That's what the extra 'wound' is about, calculating who won combat. It's not an 'real' extra wound, it's there to add one to your result to hopefully break a tie, make a tie, or lesson the impact of the morale test modifier/no retreats.

i know this is off by a year but i felt like putting my opinion into this. for games of 2500+ use 10 honorguard all relic blades but chap, give champ combat blade/ PS fo extra attack and chapt banner. on charge if you dont lose any peeps your getting 27 str 6 power weapon attacks. and your champ gets 6 str 4 power weopon attacks. put in libby for force dome. and put them in a redeemer. amlost 1000 pts but it is rape! i did a 10000 pt ame b4 and they raped 2 full termie squads and a dred and a stompa b4 they all died. the 5+ invul becomes great too. plus in apoccalypse put in tiggy, kantor and cassius take one guy out and you have reroll to hit then str 6 attacks! it becomes utter rape

however in smaller games captin on bike w/ SS/TH and combi-flamer. put command squad on bikes w/ flamers or plasma guns (depends on what your facing) LC and SS. also put chappy w/ bike and PF in for reroll on charge and a str 8 person. you know have guys that if you go 2nd you get first turn assault after weaking w/ flamers or plasmas then charge in with rerolls to hit and wound, feel no pain, 3+ invul and T 5 under 500 points and you should get your points back after you rape stuff. anslo they become tanks up against less tactical foes allowing the rest of your army to advance w/o fire!
