I'd propose that the biggest strike against the Tau is they don't look must like homegrown Japanese SF models. Their proportions are almost exactly opposite most mecha designs and their infantry just don't have a lot of variety. They can be shoe-horned into looking anime-esque with extensive conversions, but I think they mostly sit in the uncanny valley where they kinda-sorta have a couple superficial things in common with Japanese SF models but have a lot of glaring flaws that ruin the effect. Westerners in western countries who can't see gunpla everywhere they turn their heads can see them as "close enough", but when you can walk into your local Yodobashi Camera and get a real Japanese SF model for half the price and double the quality of a Tau kit, they lose their appeal as exotic mecha-proxies.

I've seen one Japanese guy with a Tau army. They aren't covered in sashimono or kanji, and they haven't been converted to look like Gundame or the anime du jour. They just look like Tau (and are quite nicely painted, I might add).

Sadly they couldn't afford to pay the rent on that place. Especially after we Gaijin clued some of the Japanese players into Maelstrom. Whoops. I know the guy who ran Iconoclasm still has his mail order business going (which was his main profit stream anyway) and I think he moved back to his tiny shop but I'm not certain about that.

I can confirm that they still have a shop in DenDen as I went by last week while searching for a battery for my laptop. Looks a smaller place in the 4th floor of the same block than the figure selling Yellow Submarine.

M.

I tried to find the place a few months ago to pick up some paints but after walking around in the rain for a while I gave up. Unless I'm blind the shop is not where the map on their homepage says it is. If the google street view images are up to date I did find it just a couple minutes walk away (giant poster of the Emperor and Horus gave it away), but then why would they have wrong directions on their own homepage?

I wouldn't buy any more from them than the occasional paint I can't wait for or primer I can't import - Japan prices are as much as double GWUK prices thanks to the exchange rate.

It´s there, hiding in the 4th floor of the brown building in the photo beside the vending machines, not a good place for the casual client.

Hey, does anyone out there know when the new edition of Fantasy is supposed to come out over here? I went out to my local GW today to see if they had a preview copy and the guy working there had no information. Well, technically that's not true... he acknowledged that the new edition is coming out at some point in Japan (something he wouldn't even commit to when I spoke to him a couple weeks ago). But he had no info on dates. I'd like to support my FLGW (even if it costs more) but if we're going to have to wait months for this like we do for some other releases then I may have to mail order myself a copy.

If I were the head of city planning in Tokyo, I'd redesign the city to allow its inhabitants more room and a better lifestyle and when Godzilla/Gigan/Ghidorah/Rodan etc destroys Tokyo, rebuild it according to my designs.

.Only a fool believes there is such a thing as price gouging. Things have value determined by the creator or merchant. If you don't agree with that value, you are free not to purchase.

City Planning in Tokyo is basically a bunch of incredibly stressed men trying to work out how to claim more land for Tokyo without destroying anymore of the natural forests and mountains north of the city than they already have done.

In any other country it wouldn't be long before some fatcat beaurocrat goes "screw it" and colonises the national park but they take their nature seriously here.

The present proposed (not accepted) expansion plans are all wonderfully wacky. Artificial islands, increased use of subterranean living and even a giant pyramid built in tokyo bay comprising multiple levels of "city". Think the hanging gardens of babylon but the size of Manhattan.

I was there the first day, and had a blast.
There is a pretty active group here in Aichi/Gifu/Mie ken. There is another tournament coming up in August, details should be on the blog or on the Nagoyahammer forum.
And the terrain was awesome! The organizer put together like 12 tables worth of terrain. And he somehow managed to do it in one of these little Japanese apartments you hear mentioned on this thread, AND got married right before the tournament too. How he managed I can't imagine.

To the OP, is Camp Zama anywhere near you? There was a group of guys who would play pretty regularly on base. The JIGG list on YahooGroups might have some more info on that.

Camp Zama is only seven stations (20 minute journey) from my local station in Kanagawa.

Kornholio is the other side of Tokyo so it is more of a trek, maybe 1hr 40 minutes to two hours but do-able for a day's gaming.

The only guy who is ever there is constantly asking me to add on a bunch of over-priced hobby supplies I have no interest in, and can go a few hundred meters down the road and pick up better stuff at half price from other stores. But then, from the sounds of things that's just GW SOP.

The quality and price of the modelling tools and supplies you can get at Yodabashi Akiba is so much better than the GW junk that it's not even funny.

I got an e-mail from the above mentioned FLGS I never found, and according to Hirayamaさん GW is going to start releasing all products simultaneously worldwide from July.

That's $112 USD, £74 GBP, €90 EUR, $128 AUD, $116 CAD

I understand Japan is more expensive, but wow. Or is that the price for the Japanese language version?

If the English text will do, Maelstrom (not that their for sure the best source, they've been fine for me) has it at £40.50 including worldwide shipping. That's a 45% discount.

Something is wrong when you can get a single item sent to you door for the same price a wholesaler pays for it on a volume trade account.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

That's totally normal for a Japanese release. The domestic prices are absolutely eye watering. A big part of this is the currency though - a few years ago the pound was double what it is now. I wouldn't dream of spending any serious money domestically. Maelstrom is a no-brainer. Even GWUK would save me close to 50%.

Other than the small rulebooks that come with the starter set there have not been any printed translations to Japanese. GWs uploads the Japanese codex in PDF form on the launch day and that´s all. So probably we are talking here about the English version that, as Temujin already said, is cheaper to get from Maelstorm or similar internet based dealer.

The new release/PDF on the GW Japan website is pretty clear that it's the English version that they're offering for 10,100 yen. :(

P.S. If anyone can hook me up with the Japanese mini-rulebook for either game, feel free to PM me if you're interested in negotiating a price.
