I think the Eldar models look fantastic. And I love how colourful they are.
My only peeve with them is that, because of how specialized each unit is (aspect warriors), when you lose one, you lose a large portion of your armies ability.

Yeah but the key is to not lose one. A well played Eldar army may not win a game, but with that kind of mobility you aren't losing many models either. WHen it works it blows people away. When it doesn't work it's an embarrassment. It gets harder nowadays because of so many 'pounce' type units (pinpoint drop pods, teleporting, lash, land raiders full of drop and charge terminators, etc) makes it more difficult to keep them out of harm's way. I really resent drop pods and flanking for this. It takes all the maneuver out of the game and just turns it into a 'who hits who first' pouncing game. Eldar can still play that game well, but now it's more a matter of chance than precision. What the Eldar were best at, maneuver and precision, has been downsized by the ability of all the other armies to catch up. The key to playing Eldar has always been to deny the enemy much chance of hitting their frail little selves, and bringing the thunder on your own terms where and when you want. That has now become much more iffy since everyone is deepstriking and flanking and so on, can't use terrain blocks as a reliable defense for our weak little guys. So we adjust, and buy a lot of Wave Serpents, and hope for the best as a delivery system for the aspects to stay safe.

Retroactively applied infallability is its own reward. I wish I knew this years ago.

Look at it this way Eldar players.

You may have it rough, but your codex aged WOUNDERFULLY. You, by FAR, are not the worst unupdated codex out there.

Yeah we're no witch hunters, Tau or Necrons (I have never lost to Necrons those poor bastards codex suck so bad, even if the player is good)... but we, although weak compared to any 5th ed., still have the capability to spam the heck out of stuff like dragon wagons, bladestormers, prisms, um... yeah.

being competative with them nowadays means all the armies will cut out the useless gak . Means phoenix lords are a thing of the past, way too expensive, falcons and vypers nerfed by new vehicle weapon/movement rules, hawks just expensively sucking (but fun to play yo-yo with), guardians being underpointsed by superior guardsmen or ork boyz, farseer powers being far surpassed by the likes of Njal and Mephiston and even basic librarians who get 2 free powers while we pay for ours, everybody's army can be running which cuts the effectiveness of our fleet, harlies nerfed by the rend change, terminators can charge out of landraiders while our banshees have to drop and wait a turn of being mowed down before they can charge etc...

most armies i see posted nowadays are like carbon copies of the last one I've seen. prisms, serpents with dragons and bladestormers, massed scatterwalkers. Take a farseer just for the ward runes against far more powerful new psykers, oh yeah, and for bladestorm/doom combo. Toss in an autarch who sucks except for the reserve roll bonus but can't even fight a powerclaw nob... rinse and repeat and you can still be competative. Toss in a wraithwall or a jetbike council for variety I guess but even those are so pointsy compared to other armies equivalents.

Try getting more complicated and yeah you have a cool army but that drop pod will get you every time. All it takes is one good flamer template coming out of nowhere and we're screwed. So while the old line of thinking was 'stay out of harms way' the new line of thinking is 'hit really hard and hope you get the first swing because you never know where they will show up and hose your overpriced t3 stuff.

I know I sound like a whiner at this point, but I am trying to be optimistic actually. The point being you can still create a killer Eldar army, you just have to cut out all the stuff that the edition change nerfed (vehicles, run, rend, etc) and focus on only the good reliable stuff that was lucky enough not to get a shoe up its butt by 5th ed. Or I guess do what I do and just take whatever looks cool and assume the other guy is just another idiot you can psyche out.

The wall o' text, it hurts my eyes!

As far as the "don't let them kill that unit" statement goes, that's pretty dense.

I was a newbie when I fell in love with eldar.

Twenty-five pathfinders, six dark reapers, six striking scorpions, ten dire avengers, one wraithlord, one fire prism, eldrad, three wraithguard, and three warlocks later...

I still sucked.

That's not a viable list.

How ARE vypers? People seem to complain about them being suck. Any substance to this?

They are useful as pt fillers able to fill gaps in the combat line.
Imagine you shot an approaching unit of Assault Marines and one or two are still alive.
You fired all your guns, almost, only the Vyper has not fired yet.
With 6 shots from two shuricannons, they could eventually bring down the last Marine.

In terms of their stats, I wouldn't use them for any other job to get done.

They immediately began performing much better.

Calm down.
Fire Prisms are often played naked for obvious reasons,
and Falcons got nerfed in the 5th ed so that they are not
seen too often at the battle field these days.

I like the Eldar too, and in a world of unlimited funds and time I'd consider an army. I'd field lots of Guardians (even though they suck) and generally try to lose gracefully.

I'm both orderly and rational. I value control, information, and order. I love structure and hierarchy, and will actively use whatever power or knowledge I have to maintain it. At best, I am lawful and insightful; at worst, I am bureaucratic and tyrannical.

Lol.
I'd switch to bladestorming Dire Avengers in Serpents.

I am not an Eldar player, but they would be my second choice. I love the idea of the extreme specialization that they encompass and the amount of skill you need to use them. Ever since the Tyranid codex changed I have loved them more because they have become closer to a specialized army like the Eldar.

Just play DE its less painful and were coming out with a new codex its a WIN WIN situation. I guess eldar are fine if you are the kind of person that enjoys overpriced lances and nerfed to hell star cannons.

If you're someone who chooses an army because you can win with it then your tastes can change from Codex to Codex.

This thread seems to be for those who just like Eldar for Eldar. We see the flaws in the army but also the good points. I think what makes a lot of us collect the army is because of the models and fluff. We like how they look and enjoy painting them.

I wouldnt play to win but it would be a nice bonus. For me its getting them on the table and just having a laugh with friends as we battle it out.

I find the best fights are with friends. You can organize lists that arnt about being super hard core (like at comps and many people you play trying to make the most perfect of army lists). One fun thing to do is make a number a various army lists. Both of you randomly choose one from a hat and fight it out.

Cool thing about Eldar, you could try some stupid\crazy army lists. For example, tons of the same Aspect Warriors. Sure, you might die, but get a friend to do the same with their list.

Currently collecting and painting Eldar from W40k.
