You kids today. AP didn't even exist for the first ten years of the game, they used armor save modifiers. Tyranids used to have Zoat ambassadors to talk to other races. Marines used to be T3 Sv4 and sometimes worked as policemen. Guard used land raiders and rhinos and fielded assault squads with jump packs. Everyone could hop on jetbikes. One virus grenade could end the game on the first turn. Squats existed, while necrons and Tau didn't. Obiwan Sherlock Clousseau was an example inquisitor. Vehicles had 20-50 wounds, but heavy weapons did multiple wounds for damage.

A question I've always had is this... Space Marines recruit from a planet for say oh ten thousand years. The best of children are taken before they reach sexual maturity, and all of those either die, become sterile space marines, or become chapter serfs who most likely never contribute to the planetary gene pool. Don't you think overall the planet would decline, genetically speaking, if you cull all the best on a regular basis?

I think this may be part of why recruiting planets only tend to be visited every few generations so as to let the population recover.

Well, IW recruit chaos followers from the Imperium, and convert them using a mixture of genetics, technology, chaos powers and training.

Wait, you are OK with the Traitor Legions being able to summon daemons out of the warp, suck entire planets into the Eye of Terror, and enact horrible psychic rituals that murder entire popluations, but you don't see how they could get new recruits?

I learned this one from D&D:

A wizard did it.
