Prices are pretty good and iirc as you go up through the bigger sets the cost per figure falls.
A box of 10 still works out at under a pound sterling per figure.

It definitely decreases in bulk. The fact that they come packaged in carrying cases further reduces the price per figure. 60 zombies are 60 us dollars. Watch for their preorders- they're cheaper than release product as well.

For anyone in the UK Hobbycraft are selling Mantic and I think the 3 for 2 deal is still on.

I'm looking at the Warhosts, seems really good for a start, especially the undead one, though I'm leaning to Elves right now.
Now if I can only convince my FLGS to start carrying Mantic's stuff...

So I should be able to get the Dwarves too
Might just start with a small set to begin with. As much as I would like the big sets, cash flow and a whole pile of unpainted minis to deal with....

True true... especially as I'm about to fund my last WM army soon, so I may just have to wait it out. I'd actually prefer to, at that point Mantic would probably have new plastics/races.
Damn, Wednesday and all I can think about is Saturday... cursed week!

About to try a small game with the kids at the After School Club this afternoon.
Will be using stand ins but don't see that it will matter.
Going to have Undead consisting of Chaos and Dark Elves as revenants with a handful of Skellies.
Probably playing Humans (Empire & Bretts) representing the forces of Pengestonia

 : Possibly the closest to real time in a turn based game? If that makes any sort of sense!? Just got back from the library and the kids enjoyed our first run with KoW. It flows smoothly, and is easy to get into. The biggest issue was the problem with Heroes. If we interpreted the rules correctly, they are pretty much invincible. Despite taking allsorts of damage. We decided the Undead hero was Captain Scarlet! They have already taken it upon themselves to attribute wounds to characters (Not bad for 10 year olds!) We played The Defenders of Pengeston vs Netherclans of Stottercliffe. (Humans Vs Undead) Due to the amount of the elites in the Defenders' ranks it was a bit of a massacre for the good guys. The Undead will be rising from the damp Yorkshire clay next Monday for another attack on the beleaugered Humans. I think that some may find the system too simple but it has a good relaxed feel to it. KoW will allow you to concentrate on tactics though and I think that is where the strength of the game will lie.

The one complaint I have is that, with modifiers, if the required roll gets over 6 = autofail with 1 = autofail. I think they should have the 6=auto succeed and 1 = autofail. It'd be more balanced that way.
-It's hard to imagine heroes outside of units too...not sure a king would be running around all by his lonesome in the middle of a battle.

I can sort of understand why the heroes are outside the units, if their stats are different. But am sure there are ways around it.
TBH at present I think you are correct
Also may have goofed with the >6 autofail

Got a game in with KoW last Thursday.
We ran 1000pts. Undead vs High Elves. Er, Elves.
I was using my TK/ VC/mantic Undead against a friend's WHFB High Elves.
Elves had: 1 Hero
2x Regiment of 10 Cavalry
1x Regiment (20) Spearmen
1x Regiment (20) Archers
1x Regiment (20) Swordmasters (don't remember the KoW designation
Undead were: 1 Liche King
1 Revenant King
1 Standard Bearer
2x Regiment (20) Skeleton Infantry
1x regiment (20) Skeleton Infantry with Spears
1x Regiment (20) Revenant Infantry
1x Unit (10) Skeleton Archers
1x Unit (5) Skeleton Cavalry
1x Balefire Catapult
We played with an open field since I had read the rules and he hadn't.
Rolling for setup, I placed first::
I setup badly, not realizing the benefits that phalanx gives vs Cavalry.
It goes across as follows:
Elves
Spears Hero Archers Swordmasters Knights Knights
Undead
Knights Rev King Spears Skellies Lich Revenants Stdrd Skellies Archers
With Catapult hiding behind
1st turn
Undead trudge upfield 5 inches each. Archers stay put and shoot Knights, Catapult does same.
Put 5 on knight unit. They pass nerve test with a 1-2.
Elf Units except archers fly across board at the double. Knights move within charge range of Undead.
If my opponent had known the rules, he wouldn't have moved quite so far.
2nd turn
Undead knights Charge Elf spears, causing 3 wd. Revenant King charges the elf hero causing 2.
The Skellie Spears angle the gap between the Knights and infantry while the infantry advance a bit but try to keep the sword in the front arc.
Revenants charge the Swordsmasters doing nothing. Liche King Heals all the archer damage off the infantry to his left.
The Standard and infantry charge one cav unit doing 3, with the Archers and Catapult shooting and doing nothing to the unit on the flank.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
3rd turn
Elven archers drill my skellies unit again. Elves charge back, with Knights on right destroying the archers.
He chooses to spin them 90 degrees, looking at the flank of the next skellie unit.
Everything else holds due to Shambling ignoring wavering. Revenants are hurting with 6 hits.
Undead half. Catapult tries to plonk the Archers and does a couple hits. Lich drops back behind Revs to swing round to the Elf Knights on the right flank.
He keeps the left Infantry close enough to heal them.
The right block of skellies charges forward, hoping to do some damage before taking it in the side next turn. Standard charges with them, and they get a Wavering on the Knights.
The Revenants put a single hit on the Swordmasters, activating Evil Dead to take them down to 5. That was awesome.
Skeleton Knights do nothing. Revenant King and Elf Hero end turn with 6 hits on each with the Elf Wavering.
4th turn
Elf player dislikes his positioning, so he moves his Archers up the field. Wavering Knights back up. Flank knights charge into side of the Skellies unit, blowing them out.
Swordmasters stall out, causing no wounds on the Revenants. Spears cause a waver on knights which is ignored.
Skeleton Knights charge, Revenant King charges to little effect. Revenants, and the skellies, charge into the front and flank, respectively, of the Swordmasters. They are destroyed.
The Standard elects to charge into the Knights on the flank, acting as a roadblock for the next turn.
I think the catapult shot at the retreated knights and whiffed.
5th turn
Elf Spears take care of the Skellie Cav and turn 90 degrees looking at the rev hero. The elf hero wavered previously, so does nothing. Archers get the charge on the Skellie spears, along with the pulled back knights. unfortunately, he couldn't get a flank, so caught both on their front. The Skellie Spears hold. The Knights on the right take out the Standard Bearer.
The Revenant hero finally deals with the Elf, and stands looking at a block of worn Spearmen. The Skellie Spears charge the Elf archers, while their buddies charge the repositioned Knights. Both units rout their opponents. The revenants turn to face the Knights on the right. The Lich heals them for 1 hit. The catapult tries to hit the flanking knights and whiffs again.
We called it at this point. The elf player had a chewed up Spearblock and a worn Knight unit left. i still had Revenants, Spears, Skellies, 2 heroes, and the catapult. He was never able to push to get to the catapult. Also, the heroes made for great roadblocks and giving me time to reposition. The lich was mostly used as a healer.
When we found a rough spot in the rules, we played it the way we would in Warhammer Fantasy, since the Writer came form there, and likely will resolve issues that way, we think.
One biggy we found was if your unit is charging, cna you cast Heal on it? We ruled no, since moving comes before shooting, and Heal is treated as a shooting attack.

Where can one get the Dwarven Throwing Mastiffs?
Right now, they exist as cardboard squares.. but I thought I saw actual figures on the Mantic site.
Are they part of some of their Dwarf Boxes?

I think they're some of the extras on the sprue. I know the undead rats (dogs?) are on the sprue for the skeleton warriors.

The sprues for Skellies are 10s.
Dwarfs were in 5s.
I got 2 dogs from one box of 10 Dwarfs.
