Subject: IG Power Blob: Special(and/or heavy) weapons?

Really depends on what you want to do with your power blob.
Las cannons work well if your blob will be camping your objective since 2 missions have objectives. You can issue orders like bring it down on leadership 9 of the commissar. You do want some melta bombs since you don't want to get held up by walkers. Good size for such a blob is 30-50 you want enough bodies and 3+ tl las cannons is pretty good anti tank and mc. Special weapons you can skip or you can go with plasma to tl with the las cannons for shooting transports and MCs but it is sort of expensive. Meltas are also good to discourage vehicles from getting to close.
If your outflanking your blob with alrahiem you want meltas and melta bombs only. You want to kill vehicles so you can assault with all your power weapons. Melta bombs are necessary to not get held up by walkers.

I always take a few heavy weapons.
I don't take the field like the above does, usually first turn I first rank/2nd rank fire the wall of lasguns and heavy weapons, second turn I assault.
What I use heavy weapons for, is I place one on either flank and get them into base contact when I assault, this gives me a huge globe of models that make combat when they wouldn't normally.

I'm curious, how do you handle being assaulted with your troops that spread out?

IG don't really rely on a volume of bodies reaching cc, the "attrition squads" just need to get all the power weapons in and then win combat over the next few turns.
so it would be nicer to get all the men into cc on round 1, but realistically its only a few wounds you are missing out on that you are instead not suffering from guns, increasing their ability to tie units up in cc.

This.
The regular guys in my squad are just there to take wounds off, and given that you can take wounds off anywhere in the squad regardless of where they are in relation to enemy models, they don't need to be anywhere near the bad guys in order to fill their role. Really, it's the power weapons that do the bumping and grinding in this list.
Now, I HAVE, on occasion, been set up in such a way where I can't get all of my power weapons into close combat at the first go (because I'm stupid and I get charged), but they're usually in there soon enough. Given that it usually takes a half dozen rounds of close combat in order to resolve it all, there's time.

So do you spread your PW guys throughout the blob, or keep them centrally located?

Meltaguns are very good in blob squads as you can threaten everything in the game with them. When playing with the blob.. take care to have coversaves from enemy shooting.

Usually I keep them next to each other and keep them near the edge of the blob on whatever side I think I'm most likely to assault/get assaulted from. A couple of times this has wound up being less than ideal, but I've found that every time I keep my power weapons apart invariably one or two doesn't make it into the first round of combat.
Also special weapons go up front as well, obviously, at the very front.
