You can get 20 saves from 2 squads with basic weapons rapid-firing, or from a vanilla marine assault squad with a chaplain charging (30 attacks, rerolled hit). Unless you're moving down even smaller than RT battles, you're going to find that that 2D6 is a real pain to use. It was a time-killer back in 2nd edition.

Pairs of different colored dice would work as well.

Also note that the RT multi-melta did 4d6 wounds. Yep, 4d6. That's ridiculous.

Honestly though, I would also suggest that the maximum that weapons do is d6 wounds. This can mean that Carnifexes be T7 with 7 wounds. Lascannons could do D4 wounds and Multi-Meltas could do d6. This means that the Carnifex will still be able to take a beating but super heavy weaponry will still bring the bastard down!

In retrospect, I could see not having a 2d6 saving working.

Just have Terminators with a 1+ save that can't be reduced past a 6+. I know the RT Terminators had a 2+ save that couldn't be reduced past a 6+. So Terminators will be cruelly difficult to bring down.

Bolters and lasguns give a -1 save, autocannons give a -3 save, lascannons give a -5 save, heavy bolters give a -2 save, multi-meltas give a -6 save.

Well I'm slowly getting there with the Wargear (actually took a few days out so haven't got that far)...

Sorry Vlad but I've decided to not go with save modifiers as I like the way saves work currently. However you are more than welcome to throw some ideas about!

As for something new to add I thought I'd throw in a little taster. I wondered what a (I know Space Marne bolt carbine/sniper rifle would be like and have come up with the following (I'm fed up of panzy sniper rifles that fire needles - I want loud, high cal, uber-penetrating rounds of ultimate death! So...

ASTARTES 'VENGEANCE' BOLT SNIPER RIFLE

A recent development in the armouries of some Astartes chapters the 'Vengeance' sniper rifle takes its namesake from the specialised round it fires, albeit at an even greater velocity. The sniper rifle was initially commissioned as a project by the Praetors of Orpheus chapter whose Techmarines saw the value in developing a weapon capable of killing heavily armoured infantry or important members of an enemies hierarchy in a single shot. The result is a very large and cumbersome weapon that only a servo-assisted, power-armoured, Space Marine can hope to carry. The project has been frowned upon by many chapters as assassination is not the direct province of the Astartes creed. However desperate times call for desperate measures, and even the most astute and zealous adherent to the Astartes' way of war can see the sense in ending a war before it even begins.

Range 24' (Given its stat line and its possibility to Instant Death and the round it's based on I thought this was a good range to go for)
S 6
AP 2
Type Heavy 1
Special Sniper, Bolt, Gets Hot!

Due to the size and velocity of the Vengeance round fired through the bolt rifle it causes Instant Death to any targets with a Toughness of 5 or less, unless the target can pass a Toughness test.

Oh and it's going to be great fun writing new rules for all the old school grenades! The likes of Dark Eldar (LOVE the new models btw - finally - I also think that £20 for a Raider isn't bad value, considering the quality and pure amount of modeling time/awesomeness of the kit! OMG I'm actually defending their prices - must be because it reminds me of Jabba's barge from Jedi ) will get to play with Hallucinogen, fo' sure. So if anyone wants to contribute ideas to get some old school weapons/grenades back into the game, please feel free...

Thanks again

I don't see why you can't make something similar for scouts. In the fluff the snipers pop off Sgts and leaders stealthy as anything (as is the way of the scout)

So are you going to make 'normal' snipers more useful?

Yes. 'Normal' snipers are better able to single out specific targets, such as Independent Characters (and squad leaders now count as IC's). I'm thinking of introducing several elements for the sniper rifle - in terms of type of rifle or round fired. So Scouts, for instance, will be able to choose the kind of rifle/round taken - be it their current needle rifles, or a more 'basic' high caliber round etc...

In all I think they will have a points increase due to their abilities but I also feel that Snipers, once revealed, will receive a lot of attention from the enemy. Snipers should be a high priority target due to the threat they can have to a command structure, in the same way as heavy ordnance/blast is a great threat to Infantry in general.
