you need to give every one of those guys a combi weapon - either 10 meltas, 10 flamers, or 5 meltas and 5 flamers. stick them in a drop pod and combat squad them when they get out, then use your combi weapons to smash two different targets that turn. what happens to them after that doesnt really matter, but you dont want to giveup your special ammo by taking normal special weapons. spcial ammo is more adaptable and often gets the same job done. AF

Excellent discussion guys. Thank you. Better to go through multiple ideas now then after I put them together.

I'm still not sold on not having 2 of the normal plasma guns or melta guns.

What if I did these 2 squads:

Squad 1: (5 man)
2x Combi-Melta
2x Melta Gun
1x Sergeant: (TBD) perhaps combi-melta + Melta bombs or Combi-Melta + Power Weapon
Purpose: Drop pod or Razorback up to a heavy tank and pop it.

Squad 2: (10 man)
7x Combi-Plasma
2x Plasma gun
1x Sergeant with Power fist.
Purpose: Drop Pod or Rhino up and Kill MEQ's and MC's. 1/2 of my opponents are some type of space marines.

Let me ask you... What are you going to kill with 9 plasma guns that you can't kill with 9 meltaguns? Twin link them all with vulkan and you're getting the same job done vs any monster or infantry target out of cover. On the other hand there's lots of things you can kill with a melta gun that you can't kill with a plasmagun. Taking melta guns is a way to make sure you have a weapon that's deadly to the widest possible range of targets. Taking 1 or 2 special weapons is ok I guess but I think you'll find that there are plenty of situations where you don't want the plasmagun or whatever, what you want is the special ammo. Ailaros is right; you see stern guard combat deploying out of drop pods and roasting gak with combi-weapons all the time because it works. It really is the most effective way to equip these guys. But as with everything else try it out and judge the results for yourself.

You can combat squad and kill 2 seperate MCs or small terminator squads, or whatever plasma is better at killing than melta.

If you're always just attacking the same target, then yeah, I agree it's a little silly, but if you're going to be combat squadding them, then there are certain times when plasma is more useful, not because it kills one thing deader, but because it can kill two scary things dead instead of just one.

Now I ask you, would you try that with a tactical squad? Hell no you wouldnt

Why wouldn't I?

Nothing is definitely applicable, because it's exactly what you'll do to a AV13 Walker without a fist.

5 combi-plazma, 5 combi-melta, and 5 combi-flamer models are all you will need imo. That way you can change your loadout and still be effective.

OK.

I did 5 combi-meltas and 5 combi-plasma.

I'll think about the last 5. I'll probably not worry about combi-flamers.

So, that means I'll either give them all bolters or combi-meltas. It sounds like combi-meltas are the most popular choice.

Thanks for all of the advice, guys.

Id say your safe on your load out for now. Combi melta/plasmas are the main ones you want. BUT Im telling you, if you drop pod a squad combi-flamers right next to, or get up close enough to, anything with a poor armor save Orks/guants/Deldar you are going just murder what every you shoot. Granted its not a hugely important combi weapon but in the right games they could be WAY more effective them popping a vehicle or two

I follow you, KingCracker.

But I rarely face orcs. My buddies play Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Chaos Marines, Tau, Imperial Guard, and Eldar.

I'm sure the flamers versus Eldar and IG would be useful, though. I could do this, but then I'd only have 5 of each. making 10 man squads would require mixing combi-flamers, c-meltas, and/or c-plasmas.

Does anyone have some examples of combi-flamers that someone has scratch built?

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

you take a flamer and a bolter. cut the top tube of the flamer out of the gun(there are 2 conecting to the nozzle)

take a bolter and cut the clip off. you will notice the grip area towards the front. the grip goes half way up the gun and cuts it in half from top to bottom as well.

the area of the handle is indented from the rest of the gun. cut this away and it should slide fairly neatly, with the grip area sliding into the area left by the tubing you removed from the flamer.

it looks a little hoaky, but here is a picture of the final product.

Thanks. That's like one I've made before. I guess that's the common way to do these?
